The Ekaterinburg Opera and Ballet Theatre opened the season with the premiere of a new production of Prokofiev’s ballet The Stone Flower based on the Urals Tales by Bazhov. Although the version by Yuri Grigorovich and Simon Virsaladze which manifested a new epoch in the Soviet ballet in the mid-1950s is considered a classical realization of this emblematic for the Urals region piece of literature, the Ekaterinburg Theatre took a path of its own. Choreographer Andrey Petrov, who is Artistic Director of the Kremlin Ballet, in collaboration with Set Designer Stanislav Benediktov and Costume Designer Olga Polyanskaya, created a version of their own which does not enter into controversy with the production by Grigorovich but changes the usual accents. The action develops in a conventional space, malachite-coloured, twinkling and blinking, and is constructed as a poem of spiritual quest. The lofty way is, to be sure, personified by Danila the Master whose artistic experiences are conveyed sincerely and convincingly by Mikhail Evgenov and Victor Mekhanoshin dancing in different casts. The embodiment of earthly passions is Severyan who appears by no means a grotesque old man but is Danila’s age, a kind of his negative other self and a pretender in his own right to Katerina’s love. In the vivid and exciting interpretation by Sergey Krashchenko who has become a discovery of the production, Severyan seems an energetic person full of contradictions and worthy of sympathy. In different casts the main female characters are danced by guests from Moscow and by Ekaterinburg soloists. Natalia Balakhnicheva (Katerina) and Christina Kretova (The Mistress), prima donnas of the Kremlin Ballet, are vividly contrasting: lyrical, self-sacrificing and wise Katerina is opposed by heartlessly masterful and self-conceited in her beauty Mistress. As performed by Ekaterinburg ballerinas Olesya Mamylova and Elena Kabanova, both Katerina and Mistress love and suffer but they choose different ways to the heart of the hero.
