Set in 1953 and traveling to 1985, the Pulitzer Prize-Nominated and Tony Award-Winner for best play, “Side Man”, is an intimate, autobiographical family drama spanning 35 years.

It is the heartbreaking story of a splintered family as told through the eyes of Clifford, the only son of Gene, a Jazz trumpet player, and Terry, an alcoholic mother.

Alternating between their New York city apartment and a smoke-filled music club, Clifford their son narrates the story of his broken family and the decline of Jazz as popular entertainment. His story is, perhaps, the most heartbreaking of them all, yet the humor and the camaraderie of the Side Men somehow softens the pain, leaving faded memories of a musical brotherhood that once was.

The decline of Jazz as a music genre and the deterioration of a trumpet man’s family leaves us with deep gut-wrenching emotion that will stay with audiences long after the final scene.
