A chamber psychological drama. Just as in wartime, in a relationship too there are situations when one of the sides strives desperately to retreat from positions in order to save what it calls life. During this retreat it burns bridges and acts like a stranger, withholding from the other side which it has given all the time. William Nicholson uses the horrific description of Napoleon’s army’s retreat from Moscow as a symbol of a dire struggle for survival in a dysfunctional marriage. This contemporary drama for three persons is a profoundly human analysis of the inhuman behaviour of those who have been driven into a corner.
