The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) ends its 50th season by challenging local theater audiences to start conversations and explore issues on mental health, suicide, and family relationships via its Filipino adaptation of Marsha Norman’s 1983 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama ‘NIGHT, MOTHER. Adapted by Ian Lomogo and directed by Melvin Lee. ‘NIGHT, MOTHER is an intimate straight play that stars award-winning actresses Eugene Domingo and Sherry Lara. Domingo stars as Jessie, a divorced woman suffering from epilepsy, who reveals to her mother, Thelma, played by Lara, of her plans to end her life that very evening. The play follows their back-and-forth conversation on the reasons behind Jessie’s decision to take her own life and Thelma’s desperation to convince her daughter that life is still worth living.
The Philippine Theater Educational Association's (PETA) 52nd season-ender is unlike the more popular stage plays (e.g., The Normal Heart or Angels in America), which also talk about HIV and AIDS. Categorized by its creators as a a?oedrama anthology,a?? Under My Skin is a one-act play that weaves through several stories based on the experiences of real-life Filipino individuals living with HIV. At the onset, the main agenda of the play is to educate its audience with correct and updated information about HIV and AIDS in the Philippines.
Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), LoveYourself, and The Red Whistle joined together to form a creative campaign that will bring light to the issues of HIV in the country. This campaign, called a?oeActing on HIV,a?? includes different components that will help debunk myths, disprove misconceptions, and eradicate the stigma surrounding the disease.
With PETA's Acting in HIV campaign, they are steadfast in their goal of tackling sensitive topics through theater and the arts. They use theater as their medium to forward their advocacies and help the public to be educated, especially with shows like Under My Skin.
