The point of musical theater (for most people) is pure entertainment, and the New Theatre & Restaurant original production of 1981’s DREAMGIRLS hits the bullseye. DREAMGIRLS is directed by Jerry Jay Cranford and stars a comparatively large, twenty-one member cast backed by an eight-piece orchestra.  Cranford has assembled a cast of Broadway belters and fine dancers to tell the tale of a Supremes-like black female singing trio around 1960 and in the decade to follow.   The show is flashy and impeccably costumed.  The set, while relatively simple, is technically superior. LED screens are used across the background to simulate locations.  Not much was spared when the producer was asked to fund this production.  Choreography by Courtney German is frenetic, well drilled, and perfectly appropriate for this genre.  The musical score is spectacular by Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen.   Several numbers (including the title track) became number one hits outside the show.

Liverpool Theatre Festival returns in less than two weeks – and one highlight of the 11-day programme is Sober Companion, a specially commissioned new play co-written and co-starring Liverpool-born actor Joe McGann and Jake Norton. 

FUNNY GIRL, the sensational musical comedy revival, launches its national tour at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) for a limited one-week engagement from September 9 - 16, 2023.

BOTTLESHOCK! THE MUSICAL at CCAE Theatricals brings the beauty of Napa Valley and the tale of the underdog 1970s winery that took Paris and the world of wine by storm in the summer of 1976. This original musical has some beautifully sung numbers, an abundance of heart, and also some wine-tasting options if you really want to feel immersive.  BOTTLESHOCK! THE MUSICAL is running through July 23rd at California Center for the Arts in Escondido.

Cortland Repertory Theatre will present as the fourth mainstage show in their 51st annual summer season the regional premiere of the dramatic comedy “The Cake”, running from July 19 - 28. This timely play, written by Bekah Brunstetter, will have evening shows at 7:30 PM, with matinees on July 21, 22, 23 and 26 at 2:00 PM.

Emmy Award-winning actor Richard Thomas is confirmed to star as Atticus Finch for the complete third touring season of the First National Tour of the history-making production of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin's new play, directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher and based on Harper Lee's classic novel. The production is currently on a multi-year national tour across North America.

The West End revival of Cabaret will open on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre in Spring 2024. While casting has yet to be announced, the London production has seen plenty of famous faces since the show opened almost two years ago. Recap some of their performances with these videos.
