'He said he had this power in his hand, fire in his being that he called animal magnetism,' says Al D'Andrea, director and book author of Snowlion Repertory's new musical, MESMERIZED, which will run from May 3 - May 12, 2019, at the Portland Ballet Studio Theater. D' Andrea, who, together with Snowlion's Producing Director, Margit Ahlin, are the co-founders of this adventurous Maine theatre company, sat down to talk to Broadway World about their new work and about the history of their theatre.

World Premiere of A SMALL GROUP Announced At The Hudson Theatre

Two First Names has announced the world premiere production of A Small Group, a new play by Taylor Gregory. Under the direction of Jacob Ortu o, opening is set for Friday, April 26, at 8pm, at the Hudson Theatre in Hollywood. The engagement will continue through May 18 only.

Teens Take On The Coming-of-Age Musical SPRING AWAKENING At Stella Adler Theatre

A teen-helmed production of the Tony Award-winning rock musical, Spring Awakening, is set to open at the Stella Adler Theatre in Hollywood on May 11, 2019. Directed by 14-year-old wunderkind George Baron, (whose directorial debut for the stage was his jukebox-styled Broadway musical revue I Confess at the Whitefire Theatre), the cast also features up-and-coming young talents performing in the adolescent roles with musical direction by Estani Frizzell. The musical is based on Frank Wedekind's 1891 controversial play about teenagers trying to find their way in the world amid the angst of sexual discovery. Featuring music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater, the original Broadway production received eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and was hailed by the New York Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle as the Best Musical of the Year.

BWW Review: It Is Easy To See Why ANNA KARENINA Is Rarely Revived

Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, adapted for the stage by Helen Edmundson, is a staggeringly ambitious project for any theatre. First of all, it is a period piece taking place in a foreign country, in this case Russia and belongs in the realm of literary classics, requiring or better suited to classically trained actors. Currently onstage at Actors Co-op's Crossley Theatre. Anna is directed intelligently by Heather Chesley and boasts a fine cast, but somehow lacks the stature that it deserves.
