Nominations were announced today for the Sydney Theatre Awards for 2021, which will be presented at an industry gala ceremony on Monday 31 January 2022 at 7pm at the York Theatre, Seymour Centre.

It's taken me a few days since seeing Griffin Theatre Company and Queensland Theatre's production of Prima Facie to write this review, as I've been struggling with finding the right words to summarise what a profound and confronting impact playwright Suzie Miller has threaded through her words, director Lee Lewis has shaped into life on stage and actor Sheridan Harbridge breathed into existence.

The acclaimed Sheridan Harbridge performs the career-defining role of Tessa, a brilliant criminal defence lawyer - a winner at the top of her game - who finds herself on the other side of the bar when a date becomes an assault. Does she risk her career or stay silent in a patriarchal justice system where it's her word against his? If Tessa believes in the law, will it believe in her?

Griffin Theatre Company and Seymour Centre will present Suzie Miller's sharp and poignant play, Prima Facie (winner of the 2018 Griffin Award), from 23rd June to 10th July at Seymour Centre.

From 7th – 16th January 2021, Riverside's National Theatre of Parramatta will present the world premiere of Queen Fatima by James Elazzi (Lady Tabouli) and directed by Paige Rattray (STC'S The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Belvoir's Fangirls). Queen Fatima will be presented at Riverside Theatres as part of the 2021 Sydney Festival.

Up Late with Belvoir and Moonshine & Tits Productions are pleased to present the premiere of 44 *** Acts in One Week, an apocalyptic rom-com created in extraordinary times. Premiering from 16 – 20 December at Belvoir St Theatre, 44 *** Acts in One Week is part gig, part radio-play and part stab in the dark, in a subversive and joyful response to the madness that was 2020. 

Belvoir has announced the productions making up the first part of their 2021 season. In recognition of the unpredictable times at hand, the first announcement reveals the shows that will take to the stage from February to September 2021, with the second announcement to be shared in early 2021.
