The Juilliard School pulled out all the stops for Stephen Wadsworth's production of HIPPOLYTE ET ARICIE (1733) by Jean-Philippe Rameau this week. Gorgeously designed by Charlie Corcoran with marvelous costumes by Sarah Cubbage, Juilliard has the resources to do it right, with professional level performers from their Historical Performance, Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts and Dance departments plus the Juilliard415 early music ensemble under Stephen Stubbs.

Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts presents Jean-Philippe Rameau's opera, Hippolyte et Aricie, conducted by Stephen Stubbs and directed by Stephen Wadsworth with choreographed by Zack Winokur. The opera features singers from Juilliard's Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts, Juilliard Historical Performance's period-instrument ensemble Juilliard415, and dancers from Juilliard's Dance Division.

Olney Theatre Center brings Arthur Miller's The Crucible directed by Eleanor Holdridge (Fickle: A Fancy French Farce, Hay Fever, I and You) to the Mainstage April 18 - May 20, 2018.

Abrons Arts Center will present the world premiere of Caborca's adaptation of Roberto Bola o's ground-breaking novel Distant Star, a harrowing tale of fascism and its aftermath. Running September 14 - October 1, this eerily relevant drama weaves Bola o's memories of life (and death) under Pinochet's American-backed dictatorship into a perverse, seductive noir of urgent political necessity.

Directed by Co-Artistic Director Joseph Ritsch, with book and lyrics by Richard Mailman and music by Ryan Haase, DORIAN'S CLOSET is a fictionalized account of Buffalo native Dorian Corey who headed to New York City for a life as a 'female impersonator' and 'performer' and became a huge hit. One may think of such Broadway hits like LA CAGE AUX FOLLES or KINKY BOOTS which both deal with the life of male performers dressing as females. And as in those two monster hits, a musical to succeed needs one heck of a star and Director Ritsch has found such an individual in Stephen Scott Wormley who is absolutely astonishing in his role as 'Dorian' . I recall seeing his former performances in ONCE ON THIS ISLAND (Olney Theatre Center), HAIRSPRAY at Signature Theatre, and in the HAIRSPRAY concert version with the Baltimore Symphony where he excelled as 'Seaweed'.

Directed by Co-Artistic Director Joseph Ritsch, with book and lyrics by Richard Mailman and music by Ryan Haase, 'Dorian's Closet' runs April 27-May 14, 2017.

Genesee St. Preview performances are Jan. 25 and 26.
