VIDEO: Get A First Look at STC's RICHARD III

BWW Review: Dark and Unrelenting RICHARD THE THIRD at Shakespeare Theatre Company
by Pamela Roberts - Feb 15, 2019

Richard the Third is one of Shakespeare's most famous villains. Ruthless and astute, savvy and unscrupulous, Richard pursues power with a single-minded and dangerous intensity. In the Shakespeare Theatre Company's production, directed by David Muse, Richard's world is grim, gray, perilous, and unrelenting. Matthew Rauch in the title role is deliciously complex - we, too, are alarmed to find ourselves wooed by his intelligence and charisma even as we are repelled by his treachery and dogged fixation with acquiring power any cost. Shakespeare's tale of villainy, and the Shakespeare Theatre Company's interpretation, asks the audience to venture into a severe and harsh world. It is a dark and fascinating journey, but not for the faint of heart.

BWW Review: Arizona Theatre Company Presents OUTSIDE MULLINGAR ~ Magnificent!
by Herbert Paine - Feb 19, 2018

If I saw nothing else this season, Arizona Theatre Company's current production of OUTSIDE MULLINGAR would be enough to satisfy my soul. In his triumphant debut as the company's new Artistic Director, David Ivers has magnified John Patrick Shanley's Tony-nominated opus on love and birthright into a honey-sweet masterpiece of stagecraft. In so doing, he has stamped his signature as a worthy successor to the brilliant David Ira Goldstein and revealed his own distinctive artistic vision. Endowed with a brilliant cast, the show runs through March 4th at the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix.

BWW Review: Marvelous HAMLET at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis
by Chris Gibson - Oct 18, 2017

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis presents a uniquely engaging and compelling presentation of one of Shakespeare's finest plays with their current production of HAMLET. So many great lines that have become a part of our language are present here, and it's really amazing to think that the Rep hasn't staged this show until now. I think that just makes it all the more special, especially since director Paul Mason Barnes, who has an undeniable talent for interpreting the Bard, brings his vision to the project. Purists may quibble with it, but I found this staging utterly remarkable. Some people prefer their Shakespeare straight up, no chaser. But I've always found his canon to be extremely malleable; no matter how much you tinker with certain aspects, the powerful and poetic text will always shine through. Now, a lot has been cut to keep the show to a reasonable length (three hours split over two acts; we're not Elizabethan audiences, after all), but they're not things that are central to the plot, and overall, this trimming adds momentum, as well as ratcheting up the tension. I wholeheartedly recommend this production, and I think it's an example of must-see theater performed at its highest level.

Jim Poulos to Lead All-Star HAMLET at The Rep This Fall
by BWW News Desk - Oct 11, 2017

With a story as epic and revered as Hamlet, a theatre company has to either go big or go home. And with its first-ever production of William Shakespeare's iconic tragedy (running October 11 through November 5), The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is most definitely going big with an all-star cast and production team.
