Whenever I take a trip across the Channel from France to England, seeing a show (or two or three) is always one of my top priorities. A 50-something carpenter from Portsmouth who had never written a play or a song came up with the story for the children's musical that will be performed this weekend at the Players' Ring in Portsmouth.

DUKE ELLINGTON'S SOPHISTICATED LADIES is a classic Porchlight show: an ebullient musical revue showcasing both the esteemed song catalog of Duke Ellington and also the formidable talents of some of the city's finest musical theater performers.

Seattle-based country-rock outfit Western Centuries will bring its Americana sounds to Club Helsinki Hudson on Friday, April 3, at 9pm. The group boasts a refreshing sound that draws as easily from modern R&B as it does George Jones. The concert coincides with the release of the group's newest album, 'Call the Captain.'

Linda Eder indisputably has one of the greatest voices of our time. As a masterful interpreter of song with an awe-inspiring belt, Eder - who was launched into Broadway fame originating the role of Lucy in Jekyll & Hyde -has recorded an incredible 17 solo albums, and has been wowing audiences from concert stages since she began performing professionally at 19.

The Drama Factory in Somerset West has become something of an institution for patrons in the area. The theatre has been around for three years already, and has had some incredible talent treading the boards. In December 2019, owner Sue Diepeveen undertook a big move and has relocated her theatre to a bigger building just around the corner.

A stalwart member of the Los Angeles Theatre community, the multi-award-winning Rob Nagle will next be appearing on the Fountain Theatre stage in the world premiere of Stephen Sachs' HUMAN INTEREST STORY, opening February 15, 2020. Rob essays Andy Kramer, who just having been laid off, fabricates a letter to the editor; then, has to mastermind an elaborate charade to justify it. Rob's HUMAN INTEREST STORY onstage accomplices include: Tanya Alexander, Richard Azurdia, Aleisha Force, James Harper, Matt Kirkwood and Tarina Pouncy. The ever-busy Rob managed to find some time to answer a few of my queries.

A fun party among best friends takes a decidedly dark turn in the World Premiere of Ryan Fogarty's cautionary tale of the deleterious effects of gossip, judgement and miscommunications. Based on a series of real-life encounters, Fogarty presents a nightmare orgy of sniping, back-stabbing and behavior most decidedly un-friendly. While my generation had The Broken Hearts Club and Longtime Companion, You'll Catch Flies feels like a millennial version of 1968's Boys in the Band'. Playing to a young demographic, this play, like its predecessors, should scare the bejesus out of gays by representing an unapologetic vision of the worst of human nature.
