With Fringe in full swing, Arise Productions threw in a treat with a performance of AVENUE Q. Presented Friday, February 4 and Saturday, February 5, 2022 at the Broad Stage, in Santa Monica, CA., created by Artistic Director Yaron Lifschitz and the Circa ensemble with new music by Philippe Bachman alongside Stravinsky‘s Rite of Spring; Circa Contemporary Circus is a unique troupe of artists that will mesmerize you from the very beginning. The company consists of powerful world-class acrobatics and dynamic performers, rich in dance, acrobatic and aerial technique. Also, plenty of emotional interpretation by the use of their bodies. As mentioned in the program, there is no storyline per se to this piece, it is a dual orchestration combining a new work and a famous classic composition to form more of something that takes the audience in and lets them interpret what they see in the moment.

There’s certainly a lot than can be said for Intiman Theatre’s current production of Charles Ludlam’s “The Mystery of Irma Vep”. It’s a classic bit of camp from a bygone era starring two very funny performers (Jesse Calixto and Helen Roundhill), and directed by Jasmine Joshua, a fantastic performer in their own right and the producer who brought us that fantastic gender bent production of “Little Shop of Horrors” a few years back. So much going for it that it even made my “Top 10 Seattle Productions to Look Forward To in 2022” list. Unfortunately, as much as it had going for it, it also had plenty going against it. A script definitely from a bygone era and a company that kept getting mired in their own jokes, making this a fun show but not the gut buster I was hoping for.

In 1946 before Julia Child rose to fame James Andrew Beard became the first “celebrity” cook with the premiere of his NBC cooking show, “I Love to Eat.” Television sets were still black and white back then and there may have been 1000 sets total in all of Metropolitan New York, but between Howdy Doody and the 9 o’clock hour, you could experience the culinary delights of James Beard.

It's always nice when we see a show that has never been performed in Ventura County so we were looking forward to seeing 5-Star Theatricals' Something Rotten!, the 2015 sendup of Shakespeare that answers the question: 'What if Shakespeare had a rival?' As you will read in our upcoming review in The Acorn, we were not disappointed. Something Rotten! is a riotous romp with a twisted premise, as brother Nick and Nigel Bottom attempt to upstage (literally) theatre superstar Willie Shakespeare with their next production: the first musical. Due to the faulty efforts of a befuddled Nostradamus, the Bottom Brothers set out to produce their musical, titled Omelette. Recently, we visited with two stars from 5-Star's production: Justin Michael Wilcox, who plays Nick Bottom, and Aleks Pevec, who plays the strutting Shakespeare.
