Opera Parallèle will continue its 14th anniversary season with the premiere of Birds & Balls, an ingenious pairing of two witty one-act operas regarding sportsmanship, competition and gender equality.

Opera Parallèle, the nationally renowned contemporary opera company based in San Francisco, has announced a series of significant achievements during its 14th anniversary season. The company has been awarded three prestigious grants, reaffirming its commitment to artistic innovation and community engagement.

Opera Parallèle will continue its 14th anniversary season with the world premiere of Birds & Balls, an ingenious pairing of two witty one-act operas regarding sportsmanship, competition and gender equality.

For its seventh iteration of the company's “Hands-On-Opera” initiative, Opera Parallèle has commissioned multi-faceted Japanese composer Kenji Oh* for his very first opera along with prolific librettist Kelley Rourke* to create an adaptation of The Emissary, a new family opera based on the award-winning novel by celebrated Japanese author Yoko Tawada, featuring an English translation by Margaret Mitsutani.

Opera Parallèle, in collaboration with The Transgender District, will help launch Transgender History Month in August with a new edition of Expansive, a showcase of transgender and non-binary classical artists in two performances at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday, August 3 and Friday, August 4 at A.C.T.’s intimate Strand Theater, 1127 Market St.

Opera Parallèle announced baritone singer Robert Wesley Mason will now sing the role of Jack Torrance and bass-baritone Kevin Deas will sing the role of Dick Hallorann in the company's upcoming West Coast premiere of The Shining, the critically acclaimed opera by Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning team of composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell.
