WEST SIDE STORY Grosses $10 Million on First Weekend

West Side Story played in 2,820 theaters, with it's numbers making it the highest grossing film at the box office this weekend. The new musical film falls short of In the Heights' $11.5 million debut but exceeds Dear Evan Hansen's $7.4 million. The film stars Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, Rita Moreno, and more.

My El Capitan experience began in its lobby with a photo opp and a display of the costume of the main two pairs of lovers of West Side Story. As you enter the theatre auditorium, American Theater Organ Society’s Organist of the Year Rob Richards (bedecked in rhinestone shoes) wields his organ prowess on the El Capitan’s Wurlitzer pipe organ. Sounding like a fully synthesized band, Richards plays movie themes and songs familiar to most.

Steven Spielberg's West Side Story grossed $800K as it was shown in 2,820 movie theaters in the U.S. for Thursday night previews. Industry projections for the film's first weekend are between $12 million and $17 million. The numbers matched the Dear Evan Hansen film's Thursday night preview numbers.
