Signature Theatre has announced an extension of Jonathan Larson’s RENT. Originally scheduled to close January 2, RENT will extend one week and now closes Sunday, January 9th.

The original musical is by Jonathan Larson, but you have to acknowledge all the style and heart that Lin-Manuel Miranda adds to his work in Netflix's tick, tick... BOOM! Clearly, this was a tribute Miranda paid to one of the songwriters who changed the Broadway industry. Rent is one of those heartbreaking and joyful stories about youth. This theme is reflected in tick, tick... BOOM! with good music, choreography and the excellent performance of Andrew Garfield. With many cameos from the Broadway industry and witty lines full of irony and emotion, TTB does a pretty good job highlighting the original stage show. It may even cause you to shed a few tears.

Netflix has shared the tick, tick...BOOM! cast party featurette, featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda, Joshua Henry, Robin de Jesús, Andrew Garfield, Vanessa Hudgens, and Alexandra Shipp. In the video the cast discusses their favorite moments from the film, Joshua Henry performs 'Green Green Dress', and Andrew Garfield shows off his juggling skills!

Last month marked the Netflix premiere of tick, tick...BOOM!, the film adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, who revolutionized theater as the creator of Rent. As a sometimes dramaturge myself, I know the position is misunderstood if it's understood at all: the shepherd of a new work, the dramaturge assists in the creative development of a piece by advising the author and the creative staff, doing research and providing insight and input on structure, tone and other aspects of the work in progress. You can imagine my surprise when I discovered that, one particular weekend, Pittsburgh was showing not one but TWO new plays about the role of the dramaturge in the theatrical process.
