BWW Interview: Puppeteer Jess Spalis on The Magic of CIRCUS 1903

I recently had the chance to chat with Jess Spalis, a UK-based artist who is currently traveling across the United States with CIRCUS 1903—THE GOLDEN AGE OF CIRCUS. The circus will arrive in Chicago on March 21. In preparation for the upcoming engagement, Spalis discussed her work as part of a team of six bringing two life-size elephant puppets to life in the show, as well as her background as an actor and an aerialist.

BWW Review: CIRCUS 1903 Recreates the Golden Age of Circus at the Hollywood Pantages

If Dorothy in THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ had run away from home and found this traveling circus instead of Professor Marvel and his crystal ball, she might never have gotten swept up in a twister and landed in Munchkinland. Instead, she might have become part of a new family, the kind that traveled the dust bowl in the early part of the twentieth century and instilled a sense of wonder in every child who was lucky enough to hear that the circus was coming to town.

BWW Review: CIRCUS 1903 - Some Magic Moments

Circus 1903 is circus at its theatrical best...in its opening number... then unfortunately for the show it drops this theatricality and with it its energy and genuine excitement. There are some remarkable artists and beautiful moments, which are particularly captivating. However, there are lengthy periods which stagnate and slow the show up from its premise of depicting circus life back in the early 1900s. This premise is really quite beautiful and some of the monologues delivered by ringmaster David Williamson are incredibly touching. Williamson is an absolute showman and has the audience both laughing hysterically and wowed by his slight of hand magic. He keeps the action flowing whenever the energy dips and is a welcomed feature whenever he enters to the stage.
