SPA Presents 2017 Cliburn Gold Medalist Yekwon Sunwoo

Society for the Performing Arts (SPA) will present the 2017 Cliburn Gold Medalist, Yekwon Sunwoo, on Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Zilkha Hall at the Hobby Center. Sunwoo will mesmerize the audience with a delightful evening of pieces from Schumann, Liszt and Schubert.

Itzhak Perlman, the reigning virtuoso of the violin, took a trip to Anatevka last night when he attended the Off-Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof, which is performed entirely in Yiddish. An Israeli-American who was born in Tel-Aviv, Perlman has frequently played the John Williams arrangement of 'Excerpts from Fiddler on the Roof' in his concerts.

The Nash Creates 'Jazz Beacon Award' To Honor Legendary Musicians

The living legends of jazz, veteran musicians who have achieved greatness in performing jazz are now being honored at The Nash with the creation of The Jazz Beacon Award. Conceived by Lewis Nash as a way to recognize the important role and contributions these musicians have given to the world of jazz, The Nash inducted its first honoree, bassist Ron Carter, during his March 23rd appearance at the downtown Phoenix jazz club.

CSO To Showcase 20th Century Works In THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND

CSO Music Director Rossen Milanov conducts the Columbus Symphony in The Trumpet Shall Sound, a performance of three iconic 20th century works that combine originality of musical language, intricate textures, and sonic beauty. Two rising stars, pianist Dominic Cheli and trumpeter George Goad, are showcased in Shostakovich's mercurial concerto for piano, trumpet, and string orchestra. The full program includes Jan ek's Sinfonietta, Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 1, and Stravinsky's The Fairy's Kiss: Divertimento.

CSO To Explore Norse Folklore In The NORDIC MYTHS FESTIVAL

CSO Music Director Rossen Milanov will lead the Columbus Symphony in an exploration of Norse legend and mythology in the Nordic Myths Festival. The program begins with the Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde, Wagner's passionate opera inspired by Celtic myths, followed by Grieg's Piano Concerto, featuring guest pianist Alessio Bax, that immortalizes the beauty of the Nordic landscape. The concert concludes with Sibelius' Lemminkainen Suite, wherein Finnish myths from The Kalevala come to life accompanied by original video art by Jason Gay.

Nat. Philharmonic Performs Bernstein's 'Debut' Concert

In continued celebration of the Leonard Bernstein Centennial, join the National Philharmonic for "The Debut," a recreation of the musical program that catapulted the legendary composer into the spotlight on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019 at 8 p.m. at The Music Center at Strathmore's Concert Hall. Three-time Grammy award-winning cellist Zuill Bailey and Grammy award-nominated violist Roberto Diaz will join Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski in performing Robert Schumann's Manfred Overture; Miklos Rozsa's Theme, Variations and Finale, Op. 13; Richard Strauss' Don Quixote; and Richard Wagner's Prelude to Die Meistersinger. Almost 50 years later, in what was to be one of his last interviews, Bernstein recalled the event: "I strode out and I don't remember a thing from that moment-I don't even remember intermission-until the sound of people standing and cheering and clapping." Internationally renowned soloist Bailey is considered one of the premiere cellists in the world, and Classical Net describes him as "One of the finest cellists alive today." South Florida Classical Review wrote that Diaz gives "a stunning performance, and one that deserved the enthusiastic ovations." The concert will feature a members-only encore question-and-answer.
