Review: FUNNY GIRL National Tour at Durham Performing Arts Center
by Jeffrey Kare - Nov 8, 2023

Funny Girl is a semi-biographical musical that follows real-life actress, singer, and comedian Fanny Brice. The story explores her humble beginnings as a struggling stage performer who dreams of making it big with the famed Ziegfeld Follies as well as her stormy relationship with entrepreneur and gambler Nick Arnstein. Through it all, Fanny defies the odds and becomes one of the greatest stars of her generation. Following out-of-town tryouts in Boston and Philadelphia, the original production starring Barbra Streisand opened on March 26th, 1964 at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway.

Review: ASSASSINS at Theo
by Rachel Weinberg - Nov 8, 2023

Although it debuted off-Broadway more than thirty years ago, Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s ASSASSINS remains a thrilling, bone chilling, brilliant, and immensely taut musical. Drawing on the United States history of successful and would-be presidential assassins, ASSASSINS is an astounding exploration of disillusionment and infamy. The musical feels remarkably prescient in the era of TikTok influencers and an epidemic of mass shootings in America; ASSASSINS unnervingly pre-dates both of these phenomena and yet is a real immediate reflection of them. When the ensemble sings in “The Gun Song” that “all you have to do is move your little finger/ and you can change the world,” it’s absolutely terrifying in a 2023 context. Sondheim and Weidman present a cast of historical characters that feel disenfranchised and disillusioned by American ideals, and modern America certainly hasn’t been disabused of this notion.

Feature: Neil Simon's 'GOD'S FAVORITE' STAGED READING at Theatre 29
by Charlie Thomas - Nov 1, 2023

A staged reading is the theatre equivalent of an audiobook or radio play; the actors read directly from the script and the focus is on the story rather than the action.  But make no mistake!  There will not only be action, but even music, dynamic lighting, and special effects that are sure to bring, or rather “burn,” the house down.
