A wedding clashes with a funeral. Should we make merry with the newlyweds, or pay respects to the dead? Israeli master playwright Hanoch Levin details the story of a family determined to throw a daughter’s wedding despite a funeral set on the same date.

Hong Kong Repertory Theatre Presents A WINTER FUNERAL

Middle-aged bachelor Lajcek is beholden to his mother’s final wish that all members of her family attend her funeral. Yet the funeral clashes with his cousin’s wedding, resulting in his aunt and her family doing everything they can to avoid the others: climbing up on their roof, dashing across a beach, even climbing the Himalayas to escape from Lajcek’s hot pursuit.

New Yiddish Rep's THE LABOR OF LIFE Will Tour To Montreal

New Yiddish Rep's Yiddish-language production of 'The Labor of Life' by the late Israeli playwright Hanoch Levin, which is playing through January 26 at the Rep's Rose and Cyrus Feldman Studio Theater, 315 W. 39 Street (9 fl.), will be presented in Montreal February 16 for two performances at La Vitrola, 4602 Boul St-Laurent, Montréal, QC H2T 1R3, Canada. The theater, which seats 150, is expected to draw from the Montreal Jewish community and Yiddish-speakers including the KlezKanada crowd and Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theater crowd. It will be a production of New Yiddish Rep in association with Art Against Humanity and Bardak Productions. Translator is Eli Rosen and director is Gera Sandler. The piece will be performed with projected English supertitles.

New Yiddish Rep will present 'The Whore from Ohio' by Hanoch Levin, Israel's foremost playwright, at Theater for the New City February 19 to 23, performed in Yiddish with projected surtitles. This black comedy, which deals memorably with ultimate questions of fantasy, lust and mortality, is one Levin's most famous plays. It is translated into Yiddish from the original Hebrew by Eli Rosen. Gara Sandler directs.

New Yiddish Rep Presents THE LABOR OF LIFE By Hanoch Levin

From January 17 to 26, 2020, New Yiddish Rep will present a Yiddish language version of 'The Labor of Life' by Israeli playwright Hanoch Levin, translated by Eli Rosen, directed by Gera Sandler, at New Yiddish Rep's Cyrus and Rose Feldman Studio Theater, 315 W. 39 Street, 9th floor. This comedy, originally written in Hebrew, will be performed in Yiddish with projected English surtitles. It is a funny and very sad play of the missed opportunities, compromises and disillusionments demanded by the 'labor of life.' Originally presented at Israel's HaBima in June, 1989, it stands out among contemporary writings for its sardonic resonance to Israelis and Jews worldwide.

This evening will feature three staged readings performed by a stellar cast of New York-based actors and directed by Michael Leibenluft of Gung Ho Projects. The readings will be followed by a discussion with the playwrights, curators, director, and translator Jeremy Tiang, moderated by Linnea Valdivia, Literary Manager for the National Queer Theater.

Eli Rosen Steps Into WAITING FOR GODOT In Yiddish, Replacing Rafael Goldwaser

Eli Rosen has stepped into the role of Vladimir in the New Yiddish Rep, in association with The Theater at the 14th Street Y, production of Waiting for Godot in Yiddish (Vartn Af Godot), translated by Shane Baker, and directed by Ronit Muszkatblit. Rosen replaces previously announced Rafael Goldwaser, who has departed the company due to unforeseen circumstances unrelated to the production.

New Yiddish Rep Announces Season Of Resistance

New Yiddish Rep (NYR) is pleased to announce an exhilirating line-up for the 2018-2019 season: "A Season of Resistance". The excitement begins in the Garment District at NYR's new Kamer Theater with The Whore From Ohio (Di Zoyne Fun Ohayo) (Oct 6, 2018) and makes its way to the East Village at The Theater at the 14th Street Y with the much anticipated return of Waiting for Godot in Yiddish (Dec 21, 2018 - Jan 27, 2019) as part of The 14th Street Y's Season of "War and Peace".
