Hudson Classical Theater Company continues its 19th season with a new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma.  Unlike their previous Jane Austen adaptations, this one takes place in the 1950’s in Newport, Rhode Island.  

The Guthrie Theater announced the cast and creative team for Kate Hamill’s world-premiere adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel Emma, directed by Meredith McDonough. 

CLUB44 RECORDS recently announced the release of The Sunday Set, the new album from Billy Stritch and Jim Caruso – including an entertaining selection of urbane standards, jazz favorites, and clever comedy numbers. Hale Center Theater Orem will produce 'EMMA' playing from Apr. 23 to Jun. 05, 2021. 'Emma' tells the story of Emma Woodhouse, who is headstrong, confident, and meddling as she match-makes and manipulates the lives of the memorable characters around her.

Jane Austen is one of the most beloved authors in classic literature, and her novels are frequently read, turned into movies, and retold in new ways. While Pride and Prejudice remains everyone's favorite Austen novel, Emma is a close second.

'I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like.' So Jane Austen famously prefaced the vivacious Emma Woodhouse, whom she describes as 'handsome, clever, and rich' in the opening words of her 1815 novel. Indeed, Emma, the meddlesome, would-be matchmaker is arguably the most controversial among Austen's canon of beloved protagonists. Yet, love or hate the leading lady, EMMA features many of Austen's most amusing supporting characters, and here is where Lifeline Theatre's production of this romantic comedy thrives.

Leonard Maltin, curator of the DVD release of the Silly Symphony series, said "Walt Disney was a visionary.  He used his Silly Symphonies to expand the medium of animation to the limits of his imagination.  They are among Walt's greatest achievements and deserve to be seen and enjoyed by a new generation."

Actor/writer and 2018 Fred Ebb Award winner Will Reynolds makes his Birdland debut premiering all new songs, including selections from his musicals RADIOACTIVE and THE VIOLET HOUR (recently developed by MTC), written with collaborator Eric Price. Special guests include trumpeter and Birdland favorite Benny Benack III, Broadway stars Kirsten Anderson (MY FAIR LADY), Aisha Jackson (FROZEN), Adam Kaplan (A BRONX TALE), and soul singer-songwriter Chris Ams (FAVORITE STATES band).

It is a truth universally acknowledged that there can never be enough Jane Austen adaptations - at least not for Austenites like me. Coincidentally, the theatre world is newly home to not one, but two works based on Austen's masterpiece Emma: Paul Gordon's musical adaptation, a regional staple for years, has finally received a cast recording.

While watching Chance Theater's brand new OC-premiere of EMMA: THE MUSICAL--Paul Gordon's charm-filled 2007 stage musical adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved 1815 novel--I noticed a welcome sensation that took over me throughout most of the production… I could not stop smiling. Delightfully appealing and positively buoyant in a great many aspects, this wonderfully witty and quite beguiling production--directed with engaging gusto by Casey Long--continues performances at their Cripe Stage in Anaheim through December 23, 2018.

EMMA, now playing at the Chance Theater in Anaheim through December 23rd, is like a perfect tea time confection.  It's lovely, sweet, and has just enough tartness to keeping it all from getting too sticky to enjoy.
