Sierra Repertory Theatre Presents HOLIDAY JUKEBOX Sierra Repertory Theatre Presents HOLIDAY JUKEBOX
by BWW News Desk - Nov 15, 2018

Christmas time is here… almost. Everyone has a favorite Christmas song and more than likely yours will appear in Sierra Rep's Holiday Jukebox. This production offers something for everyone from Grandma all the way down to the little ones to enjoy. With unabashed holiday schmaltz, Holiday Jukebox will harken back to a time when families crowded on couches to watch hokey TV Christmas specials starring Bing Cosby, Andy Williams, John Denver, and Sonny and Cher. In those hour-long programs, singing stars would display harmless holiday merriment in the form of sentimental songs, silly skits and saccharine moments. The production will feature Emily Gatesman (Intimate Apparel, State Fair), Lucas Michael Chandler (Disney's Beauty and the Beast, A Midsummer Night's Dream), Paul Henry (Irving Berlin's White Christmas), Kelly Ann Dunn (Disney's Beauty and the Beast), Kyle Moses (Sister Act), Brad Bong (Big River, Irving Berlin's White Christmas), and Stefani Potter (The Sound of Music), and more. The production will also incorporate young actors from SRT Jr., Sierra Rep's youth training program. (more...)

BWW Review: Chance Theater presents Emotional, Intimate Staging of PARADE
by Michael Quintos - Jul 24, 2017

It is nearly impossible not to be emotionally affected by the events depicted in PARADE, the stirring, Tony Award-winning 1998 musical inspired by shocking actual events surrounding the trial of a man accused of raping and murdering a 13-year-old girl. It's certainly a heavy, morose subject to wrap an entire musical around, which is probably why PARADE is so rarely produced, despite its high-caliber book by Alfred Uhry and gorgeous music by Jason Robert Brown. But when the material is executed with emotional heft and interesting staging---as it mostly is in Chance Theater's latest production---the results can be powerful, gut-wrenching, and, most importantly, thought-provoking. BWW Reviews: OKLAHOMA! Kicks off Torrance Theatre Company's 15th Anniversary Season in Great Style
by Shari Barrett - Aug 24, 2014

Torrance Theatre Company celebrates its 15th anniversary by saddling up at the James Armstrong Theatre and presenting OKLAHOMA! with music and lyrics by one of Broadway's most influential duos, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. Based on Lynn Riggs' stage play, Green Grow the Lilacs, OKLAHOMA! marked the duo's first collaboration and set the standard for modern musical theatre. Although not the first musical to tell a story of emotional depth and psychological complexity, OKLAHOMA! introduced a number of new storytelling elements and techniques including the use of song and dance to convey plot and character rather than act as a diversion from the story, and the firm integration of every song into the plot-line. And most important, they introduced a new element to musical theatre: social commentary. (more...)
