California Shakespeare Theater Announces Initiative To Introduce Transformative Justice Work In The Field

California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) today announced a set of projects supported by a one-time grant from The James Irvine Foundation, with the aim of empowering Bay Area theater practitioners to address sexual harm and identity-based harm using Transformative Justice processes. The first of these events is an invite-only one-day training intensive which was held last Saturday, December 15. The second is a day-long "Introduction to Transformative Justice" intensive which will take place on January 28, 2019 at 701 Heinz Ave in Berkeley, and be open via registration to the larger Bay Area theater community.

California Shakespeare Theater Selected As Recipient Of Prestigious Hewlett 50 Arts Commission

California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) today announced it has been selected as a recipient of a Hewlett 50 Arts Commission, a program of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Cal Shakes is among a group of 10 Bay Area-based non-profit organizations that will receive $150,000 to create important and unique work that facilitates discussions around the most pressing local issues.

Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC), the national theatrical union representing stage directors and choreographers across the United States, announced its annual selection of Top Ten 'Standout Moments.' The recognition covered the period from July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018.

California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) Board President Jean Simpson announced today the appointment of Tirzah Tyler as Cal Shakes' Interim Managing Director. Following the departure of Cal Shakes' outgoing Managing Director Susie Falk at the end of the calendar year, Tyler will partner with Artistic Director Eric Ting to lead the organization until a permanent Managing Director is hired.

California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) today announced its 2019 Season at the Bruns Amphitheater: A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare, May 22-June 9; The Good Person of Szechwan by Bertolt Brecht, July 3-21; the world premiere of House of Joy by Madhuri Shekar, August 14-September 1; and Macbeth by William Shakespeare, September 18-October 6. Cast and creative teams for each will be announced at a later date.

Cal Shakes Adds Performances For BLACK ODYSSEY

California Shakespeare Theater announced today two additional performances of Marcus Gardley's black odyssey: Saturday, October 13 at 8pm and Sunday, October 14 at 4pm. Additionally, new Pay What You Can tickets will be made available for the Tuesday, October 2, 7:30pm performance.

The Board has formed a Transition Task Force to oversee this important evolution in leadership for Cal Shakes.

California Shakespeare Theater opens its 2018 Season with the World Premiere of Quixote Nuevo, a music-filled, contemporary retelling of Miguel de Cervantes' classic Spanish novel Don Quixote. Celebrated Latino playwright Octavio Solis takes us on a journey to the fictional modern-day border town of La Mancha, Texas, where an aging Don Quixote loses himself in stories of chivalrous escapades and embarks on a quest of imagination, adventure, and Tejano music. Quixote Nuevo, directed by acclaimed documentary playmaker KJ Sanchez making her Cal Shakes debut, will feature Emilio Delgado, best known for his long-running role as Luis on Sesame Street, in the title role, and a cast of Latinx actors from the Bay Area and beyond. The Colorado Theatre Guild Presents The 13th Annual Henry Award Nominations

The Colorado Theatre Guild's 13th Annual Henry Awards will take place Monday, July 23, 2018 at the Lone Tree Arts Center, located at 10075 Commons St. Lone Tree, CO 80124. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails and the awards ceremony will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a reception at the Lone Tree Arts Center. BWW Review: Seattle Rep's World Premiere of THE GREAT LEAP Shoots and Scores

If you're familiar with Lauren Yee, possibly from her previous premiere here in Seattle of 'The King of the Yees' last year, you know of her gift for storytelling and crisp dialog. So, when another Yee World Premiere, 'The Great Leap', was announced at the Seattle Rep I was excited. But, oh no! This one's about basketball and anyone that knows me knows that I'm illiterate to all things sportsball. So, I got my sportsball translator to come with me and thankfully didn't need to rely on her too much. She explained what a pick and roll was and what the hell a point guard did but other than that I was good as I was simply immersed in a lovely story of three men at different points in their life and from very different backgrounds each trying to find their own truth during a tumultuous time.
