Long Island's leaders in business and the nonprofit field gathered recently for the Premier Business Women of Long Island Awards Gala, held at the Heritage Club at Bethpage. Among the honorees included Caroline Sorokoff, who is the Associate Director of the Great Neck-based Gold Coast Arts Center and the Director of the Gold International Film Festival. The awards program, sponsored by RichnerLive, a division of Richner Communications, honored 48 business women for excellence in their fields and contributions to their communities.

The Gold Coast International Film Festival is offering a respite for federal workers impacted by the prolonged partial government shutdown; free screenings of Oscar-nominated short films in advance of this year's Academy Awards. The screenings, which are open to the general public, will take place on Sunday, February 10 at 6 p.m. in Port Washington, and Wednesday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Great Neck. A select number of tickets will be set aside at each screening for the government workers.

Annenberg Center Live and NextMove Dance present the Martha Graham Dance Company in the EVE Project, Friday, January 25 (8 PM) and Saturday, January 26 (2 PM and 7 PM). The EVE Project commemorates the upcoming centennial of the 19th Amendment (which extended the right to vote to American women) with works by all female choreographers, staying true to Graham's tradition of social activism. The program features the Philadelphia premiere of Graham's powerful Chronicle; the first preview performance of Deo, a new work by celebrated choreographers Maxine Doyle and Bobbi Jene Smith, Graham's Diversion of Angels, and Ekstasis by Graham, reimagined by Virginie Mecene. The Office of the City Council will honor Sanford Meisner and The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre will be recognized with a Proclamation in honor of their 90th Anniversary. The Proclamation will be presented by NYC Council Member Ben Kallos at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre (340 East 54th Street) on Thursday, October 18th at 2 pm.

Town Hall announces that this year's FRIEND OF THE ARTS AWARD - it's 97th annual - will honor Multimedia Performance Artist, LAURIE ANDERSON; TheaterWorksUSA Co-Founder, CHARLES HULL; and Nonesuch Records' Long-Time President, ROBERT HURWITZ.

As BroadwayWorld reported last week, acclaimed actor and director Brian Murray, who worked extensively on and off Broadway for more than fifty years, passed away from natural causes at the age of 80.

Regina Gil, founder and executive director of the Gold Coast Arts Center and its Gold Coast International Film Festival, announced the selection along with members of an advisory board that included such noted celebrities as Joel Grey, Larry King, Richard Thomas, Edwina Sandys, Mrs. Anthony Katherine Quinn, Tippi Hedren, Greg Mullavey, Carole Shelley, Angie Dickinson, Diane Baker, Stefanie Powers and Constance Towers Gavin.

Winners included: Desperate Measures (Best New Musical), Transfers (Best New Play), The Government Inspector (Best Revival), KPOP (Best Unique Theatrical Experience), Billy Crudup, Harry Clarke (Best Solo Performance), Polka Dots: The Cool Kids Musical(Best Family Show).

The fifth edition of The Americas Film Festival of New York (TAFFNY), June 7-15, 2018, showcases feature films in fiction and documentary as well as shorts and animations that represent the rich diversity of cultures, languages and stories of the Americas. The Festival begins Thursday June 7, 6:30pm, at the Instituto Cervantes (211 East 49thStreet) with the New York premiere of Handia by Spanish directors Jon Garaño and Aitor Arregi. Handia, which means Giant in Basque language, is a touching drama about the tough life of mid-19th century traveling circus 'freaks'. 'An uneasy universe with complexity, subtlety, emotion and truth,' according to Carlos Boyero of the newspaper El Pais. The evening wraps up with a cocktail reception in the courtyard of Instituto Cervantes. All screenings are free and open to the public and foreign language films are subtitled in English.

In conjunction with its current production of Bernard Weinraub's world premiere play Fall, Huntington Theatre Company will host special events and post-show conversations that shed more light on the details and themes of the play, which tells the story of American playwright Arthur Miller and the son he cut out of his life. On-site events at the Calderwood Pavilion are free with a ticket to Fall; external events are ticketed separately.
