In Ingmar Bergmans Film DAS LÄCHELN EINER SOMMERNACHT fanden sie Jahre spater den idealen Stoff fur dieses Vorhaben - und das Experiment gelang! Eingebettet in das Formkorsett des Walzertaktes und mit je einer Prise Shakespeare, Tschechow und Strindberg gewurzt, gelang Sondheim und seinem Buchautoren Hugh Wheeler mit dem poetischen, im Schweden um die Jahrhundertwende angesiedelten Liebesreigen schließlich ein melancholisch-faszinierendes Kammermusical, das seit seiner Urauffuhrung 1973 am New Yorker Broadway die Buhnen der Welt im Sturm eroberte. Die Premiere am Staatstheater am Gartnerplatz Munchen fand am vergangenen Donnerstag statt, weitere Vorstellungen laufen vorerst noch bis Ende des Monats.
