America’s next big musical sensation has its cast! American Idol favorites Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young will lead the incredible cast of the new musical, Skates.

Boston Conservatory at Berklee Executive Director Cathy Young(Opens in a new window) will present an honorary doctorate in person to acclaimed conductor Thomas Wilkins and virtually to Tony Award-winning actor and singer Brian Stokes Mitchell at Boston Conservatory's commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 7.

Just last night, Dance Theatre of Harlem honored director, choreographer, actress and dancer Debbie Allen with the Arthur Mitchell Vision Award. The Chairman’s Award was given to Dr. Donald J. Rose and Dr. Wendy S. Ziecheck.

Debbie Allen in association with the Rhimes Family Foundation has announced the grand opening of the new Rhimes Performing Arts Center (RPAC) which will house the Debbie Allen Dance Academy (DADA) on Saturday, April 9 at 7pm. The 72nd Annual ACE Eddie Awards presented by American Cinema Editors (ACE) today announced winners LIVE at the Theater at the ACE Hotel recognizing outstanding editing in 14 categories of film, television, and documentaries. In addition to the announcement of winners in competitive categories, Michelle Satter accepted the prestigious ACE Golden Eddie Award - recognizing an artist or company for distinguished achievement in film - on behalf of The Sundance Institute; two-time Oscar® winner and 2021 ACE Eddie nominee Chloe Zhao presented the honor.

Released on HBO Max kicking off celebration of Black History Month. The documentary traces the origin in Africa and follows the evolution through each decade and genre while exploring and commenting on the political and social influences that shaped the artistry of today.

Woodie King Jr.’s New Federal Theatre in association with The Peccadillo Theater Company will present the World Premiere of Gong Lum’s Legacy by Charles L. White.

The presentation celebrates Black history and culture with the theme “through the generations, a celebration of the performing arts” and features acclaimed performers starring in renditions of some of the foremost Black cultural productions.  

The special will reveal the lead actresses who are cast as Celia and Sofia in Warner Bros.’ film adaptation of the beloved musical “The Color Purple” and feature an exclusive clip of “The Color Purple” producer Oprah Winfrey delivering the casting news to one of the actresses.

In the new documentary, Maurice and friends—Chita Rivera, Mercedes Ellington and Debbie Allen—tell tales from his lengthy career, including Broadway shows, a co-starring role in Francis Ford Coppola’s THE COTTON CLUB and his loving yet complex relationship with his superstar brother, the late Gregory Hines.

BroadwayWorld is saddened to report that playwright and theatre professor, Paul Carter Harrison, has died at 85.While teaching at California State University, Sacramento (1970–1972), Harrison conceived and directed Melvin Van Peebles’ “Ain’t Supposed To Die a Natural Death” prior to its Broadway production, and wrote his play The Great MacDaddy which was produced by the Negro Ensemble Company in 1973, and won an Obie Award.
