Palm Beach Symphony continues its 50th Anniversary Season on Monday, February 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts with Music Director Gerard Schwarz at the podium and a program featuring guest artist Santiago Rodriguez, a world premiere by Pulitzer Prize winner Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Rimsky-Korsakov's masterwork Scheherazade.

 Violin virtuoso Akiko Suwanai makes her Palm Beach Symphony debut in a concert that will also feature the world premiere of Sinfonietta, composed by Music Director Gerard Schwarz, as he leads the orchestra in another landmark Golden Anniversary concert on Wednesday, December 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Dreyfoos Concert Hall at the Kravis Center.

Maestro Gerard Schwarz and narrator Jon Secada embark upon a newly crafted reimagining of Sergei Prokofiev's musical masterpiece when Palm Beach Symphony premieres “The Adventures of Peter and the Wolf” as part of the Dale A. South Florida PBS will be the first in the nation to televise Palm Beach Symphony's production of “Eudora's Fable: The Shoe Bird,” an adaptation of Pulitzer Prize winner Eudora Welty's only children's book, “The Shoe Bird.” The concert will be broadcast Sunday, September 11 at 3 p.m. on WPBT and 7 p.m. on WXEL in Palm Beach County.

As a big-city dweller feeling disconnected from the food he eats, David Moscow will show audiences what it takes – really takes – to make a meal with the debut of the television series “From Scratch,” which will premiere on Sunday, February 16 at 6 p.m. ET on FYI (www.fyi.tv).  

Based on the cult classic movie of 1992 starring Christian Bale, David Moscow, and Bill Pullman, Newsies tells the 'David vs. Goliath' story of the newsboys of New York rising up to fight newspaper publishers in an attempt to secure rights for themselves. Newsies is also inspired by the real-life Newsboy strike of 1899, when Kid Blink led a group of newsies on a two-week-long strike against Pulitzer, Hearst, and other newspaper publishers. The musical shines a light on the exploitative labor practices and social injustices as a group of young kids try to fight against the powerful and corrupt businessmen of New York.

While the 1992 movie Newsies received mixed reviews and did not perform well in movie theaters, it developed quite a following as a home movie. The inspirational movie, based loosely on the historical newsboys' strike of 1899, starred Christian Bale as Jack Kelly and David Moscow as David Jacobs. In 2011 Disney Theatrical Productions adapted Newsies for the stage, and it opened on Broadway in 2012, earning eight Tony Award nominations. Disney's Newsies: The Broadway Musical, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and book by Harvey Fierstein, has found its way onto stages in many schools and community theatres, building up a new generation of Newsies fans. With its rousing musical numbers and high-energy dancing, Newsies is sure to bring audiences to their feet. Under the direction of Adam Gustafson and Kyle Weary, Theatre Harrisburg's Newsies opened at the Whitaker Center on November 2nd, when I had the opportunity to view this delightful show.
