Freestyle Love Supreme Will Come to the Kennedy Center

The Kennedy Center just announced improvised Hip Hop musical ride, Freestyle Love Supreme (July 16-21), as a new addition to the 2018-2019 comedy season. For nine performances only, Freestyle Love Supreme makes its first D.C. appearance following its sold out Off-Broadway run this winter. Conceived by Anthony Veneziale and co-created by Hamilton's Thomas Kail (Director, Co-Producer) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Co-Producer), Freestyle Love Supreme takes cues from the audience to deliver unique, improvisatory-Hip Hop musical experiences. Freestyle Love Supreme is produced by Kail, Miranda, Jenny and Jon Steingart, and Jill Furman. Previous guest performers in Freestyle Love Supreme include Lin-Manuel Miranda, James Monroe Iglehart, Christopher Jackson, and Daveed Diggs.

Based on a true story that gripped the country, When They See Us will chronicle the notorious case of five teenagers of color, labeled the Central Park Five, who were convicted of a rape they did not commit. The four part limited series will focus on the five teenagers from Harlem -- Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise. Beginning in the spring of 1989, when the teenagers were first questioned about the incident, the series will span 25 years, highlighting their exoneration in 2002 and the settlement reached with the city of New York in 2014.
Christopher Jackson To Serve As Keynote Speaker For Mancini Awards

Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center is pleased to announce that star of CBS' hit show BULL and Broadway's Hamilton, Christopher Jackson, will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2019 Henry Mancini Awards. In its 25th year, the Mancini Awards celebrate excellence in high school musical theatre in Beaver, Butler, and Lawrence Counties and are a participant in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. This year's ceremony is May 19 at 7 pm in Lincoln Park's Mainstage Theater.
Thomas Kail & Everett Bradly to Be Honored by SAY

The Stuttering Association for the Young (SAY.org) will host its 17th Annual Benefit Gala, honoring long-time SAY supporter and Tony Award-winning director Thomas Kail with the Budd Mayer Advocacy Award, and inducting SAY's Musical Director Everett Bradly into the SAY Hall of Fame. Hosted by Broadway's Tony-Award-winning, past SAY Honoree Kelli O'Hara, the benefit gala will take place on Monday, May 13th, 2019 at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts (566 LaGuardia Place), followed by a Chef's Tasting Event at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers.

Weinberger Award for Emerging Librettists, a juried cash and production grant given annually to support the early work and career of a deserving musical theatre librettist, commemorating the life and work of playwright/librettist Eric H. Weinberger (1950-2017), who was a Drama Desk Award nominee for Best Book of a Musical (Wanda's World), and the playwright/librettist of Class Mothers '68, which earned Pricilla Lopez a Drama Desk Award nomination.

In 1989, the media dubbed them the Central Park Five and they were forever linked together by that moniker. On May 31, their true story will come to Netflix as a four-part limited series from Academy Award® Nominee and two-time Emmy Award® Winner Ava DuVernay. Now titled When They See Us, the series is based on the stories of the five men who were wrongly accused of a crime they did not commit.

The only part of FREESTYLE LOVE SUPREME that doesn't bounce off an audience response comes at the very beginning when four voices announce a 'mic check' and standard phrases like 'mic one check' and 'this is microphone two' get extended into a frenetic off-the-cuff mixture of words, rhythms and beats.
