Seattle Rep has released first look footage of APPROPRIATE, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' 2024 Tony Award-winning drama now playing through May 10, 2026 at the Bagley Wright Theater in Seattle.

Dear Readers, why do we like shows about dysfunctional families? I posit that it’s one of two reasons. Either we are reveling in knowing that your family isn’t that bad or watching as more of a catharsis of seeing a family like yours get through their dysfunction. Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins seems to enjoy them too as he keeps making them and making them well. Last year’s Tony Award winner for Best Play was his, “Purpose”, and the year before he won the Tony for Best Revival of a Play with “Appropriate”. But whatever your reason for seeing these kinds of shows, you’ll want to catch the Seattle Rep’s current production of “Appropriate” as they’ve knocked it out of the park.

The Broadway-bound new musical, The Wanderer, based on the life and music of Dion DiMucci will receive an industry invitation-only reading on Friday, January 23rd in New York City.

Dear Readers, back in 2015 we were blessed with the masterpiece that is “Come From Away” by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. It had one of its pre-broadway tryouts at The Seattle Rep and was a huge hit and personally, absolutely wrecked me emotionally. Now 10 years later this brilliant show is back at the Rep but with a local production as opposed to the Broadway or touring staging. And while the show still wrecked me and made me leave with a soaked handkerchief, there were some elements that gave me pause. We’ll get to those.

Broadway alum and Academy Award-winning performer Cuba Gooding Jr. has joined the cast of the gritty new thriller Atlas King, written and directed by Nika Agiashvili.

If you’re at all familiar with the plays of Lauren Yee, Dear Readers, then you know of her delightfully odd situations, rich characters and scintillating dialog. People are still talking about last season’s “Cambodian Rock Band” but my favorite was her “King of the Yees”. Her work brings out the good and the bad in relationships and leaves you smiling or even giggling while tragedy strikes. And her latest, “Mother Russia”, with its World Premiere at the Seattle Rep, falls right in line with those other gems.

ACT Contemporary Theatre has announced the cast and creative team for the 49th year of the beloved theatrical classic, A Christmas Carol. Originally adapted for the stage in 1976 by ACT founder Gregory Falls, this season's production will see the return of Seattle actor Darragh Kennan in the iconic role of Ebenezer Scrooge.

Author Ken Ludwig has certainly had a prolific career filled with some wonderful gems, “Crazy for You”, “Lend Me a Tenor”, and “Moon Over Buffalo” to name just a few. So, Village Theatre’s new production of his 2017 work, “Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood” sounds like a rollicking good time. Unfortunately, this new retelling of a classic adventure meanders about awkwardly not knowing what it wants to be. And that’s just one of the two big problems of a production that just laid there hoping the audience would find something funny in it.

Northern Stage’s joyous holiday tradition returns with the world premiere production of The Railway Children, a new American adaptation of Edith Nesbit’s beloved British classic children’s novel with new music and lyrics by Jane Shaw and Mark Hartman (A Christmas Carol at the Guthrie; The Wanderers at Roundabout.
