Tonight, The REV Theatre Company raises the curtain on its 2025 season with the opening of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s “Jesus Christ Superstar,” directed by Rice’s son Donald Rice. Check out photos from the show. 

Stepping into the director’s chair for the first time at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse in over four decades, London-based writer, producer, and filmmaker Donald Rice brings his cinematic eye and deep reverence for rock opera to The REV’s production of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.

Everyone and his mother has seen JOSEPH – it’s an Andrew Lloyd Webber classic. I myself, have seen the show live five times – including school, community theatre, and professional productions (Never mind the Donny Osmond version that we hired on VHS when I was a little girl and which the show’s composer graciously made available to stream for free in 2020, when we were all bored out of our minds while COVID raged outside). Season 3 of the Palm Springs Cultural Center's always sold-out Broadway’s Best…In The West concert series, Executive Produced by Dr. Tom Truhe and presented by the Palm Springs Cultural Center now has tickets on sale. By 1980 the musical was one of the highest grossing musicals worldwide. It also holds the record for the longest-running West End musical, running over a total of 8 years with 3358 performances.

If there’s any fanbase that is totally unafraid of in-jokes and self-references, it’s musical theatre enthusiasts. This is a group of people who will quote a throwaway line from one of Sondheim’s lesser known shows and not care whether or not the joke lands. It’s that kind of sentiment that The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!) tapped into when it first premiered in 2003, and little about theatre kids has changed, so the show goes on.

Tom Francis, who has been nominated for a Tony Award for his acclaimed performance as Joe Gillis in the Broadway production of Sunset Blvd, recently visited TODAY to discuss the nomination and his experience with Jenna Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie. Check out the interview.
