Review: THE MOORS at Seattle Public Theater
by Jay Irwin
- Mar 23, 2024
We’ve had a recent spate of the murderous, dark comedies, Dear Reader. First there was “Blood Countess” from MAP Theatre and then the 5th Avenue gave us “Something’s Afoot” and is soon to give us “Clue”. And now Seattle Public Theater has joined in with Jen Silverman’s “The Moors”. And like the others, this one has a tendency to dwell on its own joke a touch too long. But luckily for us it also has a killer cast (pun intended) to keep us giggling.

Review: A WOMAN OF NO IMPORTANCE at Taproot Theatre
by Kelly Rogers Flynt
- Jan 28, 2023
A WOMAN OF NO IMPORTANCE is ironically an important work by none other than the esteemed Oscar Wilde. A thinking man’s comedy, Wilde imbues this work with witty banter while challenging society’s norms. The clips along with a steady stream of laughs punctuated by occasions of loud guffaws and eye-popping truths. You will be charmed. You will be delighted. You will be entertained.

BWW Review: YEN at ACT Grabs You and Doesn't Let Go
by Jay Irwin
- Sep 22, 2019
Dear Readers, a few years back I was fortunate enough to see a production made possible by ACT and the Kenan Fellowship in Directing, a?oeGuards at the Taja??. A show that still sticks with me to this day. And I say a?oefortunate enougha?? as it was only on stage at ACT for a few performances. Now ACT has brought us the latest recipient of the Kenan Fellowship, Rey Zane, and her production of Anna Jordan's a?oeYena?? and I can tell that this brutal and gripping play will also be one to stick with me thanks to some stunning direction and performances.
BWW Review: Reboot's SWEENEY TODD Needs to go Back in the Oven
by Jay Irwin
- May 21, 2019
Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's "Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street" is arguably a masterpiece of American Musical Theatre. It's haunting, thrilling, and heartbreaking when it's done right. But in order to do it right you need to understand and be able to convey this complex story and characters as well as sing some quite difficult music. Unfortunately, the current gender bent production from Reboot Theatre Company chose to forsake that story for comedy and sight gags leaving a confused, under baked, sloppy mess.

BWW Review: Strawberry Theatre Workshop's WHY WE HAVE A BODY a Head-Scratcher
by Amelia Reynolds
- Sep 19, 2017
Everyone has memories that feel rife with significance, but said significance does not necessarily make sense to others. And if the best depiction of said memory is beyond traditional language, then playwrights like Claire Chafee use poetic language to communicate said significance. In Chafee's Why We Have a Body , four women tell their stories in a series of vignettes and monologues using poetic language, and yet any significance Chafee is trying to communicate gets lost in translation.
