BroadwayWorld has learned that that Broadway Stars and real-life couple Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young will headline the First National Tour of the musical comedy First Date. Although DeGarmo and Young were both contestants on 'American Idol,' their 'first date' was during the Broadway production of HAIR in 2010. After dating for three years, they tied the knot in 2013 and immediately starred in the National Tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. They will share the stage once again beginning fall of 2020. First Date is written by Austin Winsberg (book) with Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner (music and lyrics) and this newly updated production will be directed by Matt DiCarlo (NYNational Tour: The Play That Goes Wrong). FIRST DATE is a cute, somewhat formulaic, kitsch musical comedy that packs a whole lot of laughs. The show, which premiered at Seattle's ACT Theatre in 2012 and opened on Broadway a year later, kicks off North Raleigh Arts Creative Theatre's (NRACT'S) new season. The score features music and lyrics by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner of the upcoming movie-to-Broadway adaptations of 17 AGAIN and 13 GOING ON 30. Casey is a self-proclaimed serial dater who is set up with Aaron, who she dubs a BDV (blind date virgin). As the date unfolds in real time (sans intermission), the unlikely pair navigates through the ice-breakers, awkward moments, and conversational landmines all too familiar to anybody who has been on a blind date.

Another video from the Stages Musical Theatre Festival was just released this week. New Musicals Inc. aired 51 hours of live streamcast footage of musical theatre readings, concerts, creative sessions, as well as interviews with writers and producers, all part of the most recent Stages Musical Theatre Festival. The Festival ran for fifteen years in Chicago before New Musicals Inc. brought it to the West Coast about a decade ago.
First Date was not the first dating show I've seen at the Denver Center's Garner Galleria Theatre. And it probably won't be the last. But it's definitely my favorite so far.
