Review: BARRACKING FOR THE UMPIRE at Subiaco Arts Centre

In 2022 BARRACKING FOR THE UMPIRE graced the stage, presenting a new perspective on Aussie rules football. Returning in 2024, the world may not have changed much, but with two AFL premiership players forced into early retirement this year by concussion issues, the play puts forth a poignant voice of reason against the passion from the crowd.

Review: RIDE THE CYCLONE at The Contemporary Theatre Of Ohio

RIDE THE CYCLONE is more like an eccentric Tim Burton film than a John Hughes hug fest. However, the moments of genuine humanity and sentiment keeps the show from going off the rails.

Review: Lighter Side of the Fall of the Weimar Republic, in Death of Classical's TIERGARTEN?

I wouldn’t say that Andrew Ousley’s TIERGARTEN cabaret draws parallels between Weimar Germany—from World War I, leading up to the Nazification of the country and finally World War II—and the current political climate in the US. But you could. After all, who doesn’t love a little escapist fiddling while Rome (and other entities)—burns, here performed as part of the Carnegie Hall festival “Fall of the Weimar Republic: Dancing on the Precipice”?

Review: LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST, Royal Shakespeare Theatre

Spring brings renewed energy into the year. There isn’t a better moment for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s recently appointed Co-Artistic Directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey to launch their vision for the organisation. Led by a big name that will attract new audiences who are probably younger than your typical RSC crowd, we hope Love’s Labour’s Lost is setting the tone for what’s coming. If this opening is anything to go by, this upcoming era seems to be adopting Shakespeare for a contemporary audience while maintaining the reverence for the language and the pomp of tradition.
