In this version of the familiar story, we are whisked away to the 1800s American West. The sparring young men are now gun-touting cowboys, the ball is a barn dance, and the soundtrack is all banjos and whistles. It’s a bold transposition of the star-crossed Verona lovers, but one that works surprisingly well.

Shakespeare’s Globe has revealed the cast of Romeo and Juliet, directed by Associate Artistic Director Sean Holmes. Romeo and Juliet launches the summer season, running from 25 April until 2 August in the Globe Theatre.

The Luke Westlake Scholarship supports a working-class student through their last year of study and first year entering the industry as a performer. It was awarded to the Melodie Karczewski from Thanet, Kent, during a ceremony at the Turbine Theatre, Battersea Power Station on Sunday evening, attended by the 8 shortlisted performers, panelists, and industry professionals.
