Review: ENGLISH at Studio Theatre

Is learning a new language a hindrance to your heart’s love of your cultural heritage, is it purely functional, or is it a means of gaining enrichment and new understanding? Is precise pronunciation meant to trip lightly off the tongue in any language or is it best to take pride in your original accent?  Is Farsi one of the most poetic languages in the world? These are some of the questions raised in the alternately serious, disarming and somewhat indefinable play English now being presented at the Studio Theatre.

BWW Review: NATHAN THE WISE at Theater J / Folger Theatre

'Nathan the Wise' handily lives up to the reputation of the two powerhouse theaters behind it. With a beautiful message, a solid cast and creative team, and a spirited atmosphere, 'Nathan the Wise' is one of those productions you want to cheer during the curtain call, then immediately go back and watch it again.

BWW Review: WE'RE GONNA DIE at Round House Theatre

You can tell things are getting better in the world just by watching the Round House Theatre's latest production. It's the last of their filmed productions, for one thing. At its start, more people are seen coming into the theater to react to the performance - some 25 instead of the five or 10 in past productions. It's not strictly a solo performance on stage, as others have been - there's a backing band that even sometimes interacts.

BWW Review: THROW ME ON THE BURNPILE AND LIGHT ME UP at Round House Theatre

In the most trying of times, the Round House Theatre has managed to put together a pretty remarkable season, entirely online but leaning on one-person showcases that eliminated the need of distancing among cast members.

BWW Review: A BOY AND HIS SOUL at Round House Theatre

This is the 50th anniversary year for Philadelphia International Records, the outfit founded by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff that gave us, among many other things, 'TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia), the ebullient instrumental by MFSB, given life as the theme of 'Soul Train' and used to great effect once more in the Round House Theatre's online production of 'A Boy and His Soul.'

BWW Review: THE OHIO STATE MURDERS at Round House Theater

The third online production in the series, and the second from Kennedy’s Alexander Plays, is a penetrating, seemingly straightforward tale of mid-20th century discrimination in academia, blended with unspeakable crime.

BWW Review: HE BROUGHT HER HEART BACK IN A BOX at Round House Theatre

Round House Theatre’s production of “He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box” is a haunting portrait of segregated Georgia.
