Most recently feaured Off-Broadway at the New Victory Theatre in AJIJAACK On Turtle Island (D. Avery, L. Mitchell, T. Defoe & K.Tarrant, composers), Joan has been featured over the past year in works by Rachel Chavkin (Primer for a Failed Superpower), Jonathan McCrory (How the Light Gets In / Water Is Life, T. Defoe & T. Sinutoke composers), Heather Henson & Ty Defoe?s spectacular CRANE: On Earth, In Sky & AJIJAACK On Turtle Island and at the annual Summer HOOT & Clearwater Music Festivals. She has enjoyed notable reviews Off-Broadway in CEDARS at La Mama ETC, as Lady Macbeth, and as Paulina in The Winter's Tale for Amerinda's Native Shakespeare Ensemble in NYC. Previous credits: the National Tour of Camelot with Richard Harris, the West Side Story 30th Anniversary Company, TV-movie Everyday Heroes, Walt Disney's Pocahontas & LionsGate's Blood Red Earth; recordings including two jazz albums with stellar jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette - Earthwalk and Music for the Fifth World - and appearances with Kenny Burrell, Pete Seeger, Paul Winter, Cornelius (Neal) Tate, Waylon Jennings and David Amram, to name a few. Her works also include solo CDs and collaborations: traditional songs, stories co-produced with her son GC Yerry, contemporary works with musical allies Gus Mancini, Dennis Yerry and other fellow artists, and a straight-ahead jazz sextet with indigenous flair - SPIRITED - taking off from the Hudson Valley to rave notices. Ajijaak on Turtle Island, currently on tour throughout the U.S., performs at The New Victory from March 1 - 10, 2019.

Puppet Artist Heather Henson Announces Tour Of AJIJAAK ON TURTLE ISLAND


Visionary puppet artist Heather Henson announced today IBEX Puppetry's upcoming four-city national tour of Ajijaak on Turtle Island. Co-directed by Grammy Award winner Ty Defoe and Henson, the daughter of legendary puppeteer Jim Henson, the tour launches by opening the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival with performances January 17 through January 20, and follows with performances in Baraboo, WI at the Al. Ringling Theatre (January 24-25); FirstWorks Frontier Series in Providence, RI (January 31-February 1); and New York, NY at The New Victory Theater (March 1-10). Mirage Theatre Company is making its La MaMa debut with 'Cedars,' a theatrical adaptation of Native American poetry and prose performed by Native American actors, directed by June Prager. Through the poetic voices of contemporary Native American writers, the play gives a 21st century face to the struggles of indigenous people, depicting their adaptation into modern-day society and celebrating Native American culture and enduring spirit. Participating writers include Arthur Tulee (Yakama), Tiffany Midge (Hunkpapa Sioux), Gail Tremblay (Onondaga/M'kmaq), Deborah A. Miranda (Ohlone-Costanoan Esselen), Alex Jacobs (Akwesasne Mohawk), William Michael Paul (Hunkpapa Sioux), Joseph Bruchac (Abenaki), Martha Brice (Tlingit), Molly McGlennen (Anishinaabe), and Evan Pritchard (M'kmaq). La MaMa will present the work, in association with Mirage Theatre Company, January 22 to February 1 in La MaMa's First Floor Theater, 74A East Fourth Street (East Village).
