Book: MAN OF THE YEAR: A Memoir

Author: Lou Cover

1978 promised to be another year of dislocation for Louis Cove, the eighth move in his short life. His free-thinking Jewish family had just left New York and Zabar's behind for working-class Salem, Massachusetts, a town not far evolved beyond the witch trials that made its name - hardly the place for a long-haired Mets fan on the cusp of his Bar Mitzvah. And that was before the arrival of Howie Gordon: actor, artist, hippie, lover, and Playgirl's Mr. November, 1978. Howie has Hollywood ambitions and a highly unorthodox idea for achieving them: be named Playgirl Man of the Year, 1979. When he enlists a besotted Lou as his "campaign manager," the unlikely duo embarks on a quest to win the hearts and minds of Salem. This delightful book is the improbable true story of Lou's 13th year, one very unusual campaign and the unexpected guest that taught him how to be a man. This book is a fresh twist on the coming-of-age memoir.

Lou Cove is an author, speaker, and fundraising guru. He has devoted his career to the intersection of creativity and capacity-building, helping launch and to grow countless creative ventures. Lou advises CEOs and boards of trustees at numerous national nonprofits, including the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, The DiatTribe Foundation, American Institute for Architects, Represent.Us, Double Edge Theatre and Girls Leadership Institute. In addition to coaching leaders and their teams on strategic growth and sustainability, Lou believes in putting his money where his mouth is, and has raised more than $70 million for the causes he cares most about. He is former Executive Director of Reboot, a network of leading young Jewish creatives devoted to "rebooting" modern Jewish culture. Cove was also Vice President of the National Yiddish Book Center, Senior Producer at MassLive.com/Advance Internet, and Associate Publisher at American News Service, and Editor-in-Chief of Optimist Publications.
