Principal Oboe Charles Hamann takes the spotlight amongst his NAC Orchestra colleagues for Vaughan Williams’s rarely heard jewel of a concerto, which charms the ear with its many moods—from intimate to melancholy to whimsical—and concludes with a technically challenging Scherzo. Two Classical period works bracket the concerto. The 29th Symphony by the still-teenaged Mozart amazes with its youthful vigour, sunny temperament, and a finale that suggests the spirited tally-ho’s of a hunting party; and Schubert’s graceful Fifth, inspired by Haydn and Mozart, was also created when the composer was still a teen.
