Dvo?ák wanted to convey “impressions and greetings from the New World” in his Ninth Symphony—like a musical postcard from America—with lovely melodies, bold horns calls, and an unforgettable theme. Haydn’s symphony, full of humorous musical shenanigans and sound effects, is the jolly curtain raiser.
