About The Shape of Her Voice
The Shape of Her Voice explores the multifaceted experiences of Asian women as they navigate societal stereotypes in search of their true identities. The performance challenges preconceived notions of obedience, passivity, and submission, emphasizing that Asian women possess their own voices, personalities, and unique expressions. Through movement, voice, and visual art, this piece boldly reclaims the narrative, dismantling imposed labels and redefining identity on their own terms.
“As an Asian female artist, my identity is not just about appearance, accent, or cultural labels—it is about breaking free from those labels and finding my own form of expression,” says Zihan Xu. “Through this piece, we expose real emotions, struggles, and strength—the moments of trying to ‘fit in,’ the times our accents were corrected, the constant effort to prove that we are more than stereotypes.”
Inspiration and Cultural Significance
Reflecting on the motivation behind participating in the QIAA Asian Culture Performing Arts Showcase, Dorothea shares: “It seems that our black hair, black eyes, and even our accents have become ways for others to define us. We are expected to be obedient, well-behaved, and to adapt effortlessly. But through this performance, we want to express that we have our own voices, our own personalities, and our own identities to show.”
The Shape of Her Voice is more than just a performance—it is an assertion of presence, strength, and self-definition. It resonates deeply with the theme of the showcase, amplifying the diverse and powerful voices within the Asian artistic community.
