UMOJA at Making Our Space Theatre Co.

The next offering in Making Our Space Theatre Co.’s Last Stop readings series: n partnership with The Flea Theater! Our series continues this month with UMOJA by LaDarrion Williams, the New York Times Best-selling author of Blood at the Root. 

Inspired by his own experiences navigating college at a predominantly white institution, UMOJA explores what happens when a group of Black students band together to form their own safe haven: a space they dream will be free from micro-aggressions, from being silenced, and from the pressure to shrink themselves. Both hilarious and unflinching, UMOJA showcases the breadth and complexity of the Black collegiate experience, and what it really means to form a community. 

Director Ares Harper (Roundabout Directors Group), dramaturg Dezi Tibbs (Oh, Mary!), and stage manager Shay McWeeney lead a spectacular young cast of rising stars Bryce Foley, Sabrina K. Victor, William Appiah, Alecsys Proctor-Turner (Netflix’s Survival of the Thickest), Kevin Anthony Jr., Aaron Michael Tyler, and featuring Tricia Mancuso Parks (The Actors’ Gang) as University President Dr. Cook.

The Last Stop series showcases boundary-pushing plays ready for production—connecting them with the theatre-makers who can bring them to life. To that end, LaDarrion’s voice is singular, and UMOJA fills a needed gap in the canon for urgent, contemporary stories centering a young, Black ensemble. We’re proud to share it with the world in hopes it finds its way to more stages and gives more young actors a chance to find themselves in its roles. We invite you to join us on Tuesday, August 19th or Wednesday. August 20th at The Flea (20 Thomas St). Doors at 7:00 PM, reading at 7:30 PM. Drinks will be for sale before and after the show. We also invite you to hang out, network and meet the artists at our cocktail hour once the program concludes.
