With sold out performances last summer and two HOLA Award nominations, ALPHA OMEGA THEATRICAL DANCE COMPANY proudly presents SHARING THE STAGE featuring...JULIA DE BURGOS - CHILD OF WATER!
JULIA DE BURGOS – CHILD OF WATER, written by Carmen Rivera, takes us on a surreal journey of the life of the great Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos. The story breaks time and space and takes place in the chasm between life and death. Born in 1914, Julia rose from humble beginnings to become one of the premier poets of her time. By the age of 21, Julia was regarded as a special talent within literary circles in Puerto Rico. In 1939 she began her travels to New York and the Caribbean, and the reputation of her genius continued to grow. Julia’s good fortune did not last, and she lived the last part of her life in New York City; in desperate circumstances, ending with her tragic death on the streets of Spanish Harlem.
Much of Julia’s poetry is about her struggles reconciling the woman with the poet. She frequently struggled with the chaos she feels her “soul” has caused her. Her “soul” is the part of her that is the artist and the fighter that continuously confronts society’s prejudices. Throughout her life, there were times that Julia wished to silence her “soul.” She was never able to come to terms with her genius. In JULIA de BURGOS: CHILD OF WATER, Julia throws her “soul” away, and she tries to live her life without it. “Julia’s Soul” is treated as a separate character -- as the entity that was the artist -- which takes Julia on a journey back throughout her life to Puerto Rico, Cuba, Washington D.C., and finally to the present, in New York City, where the “Soul” and “Julia” are at long last able to find integration and peace.
