Hula Hoop at Teatro Latea

HULA HOOP

It’s 2022. Girlhood is complicated, growing up is overrated, and reality is getting a little too real.

Hula Hoop is a dark, surreal, girly comedy about two best friends in their twenties navigating an unexpected pregnancy, the chaos of growing up before you’re ready, and the increasingly desperate attempt to hold onto the versions of themselves they’ve always known. One lives with maladaptive daydreaming disorder. Both love to hula hoop.

Equal parts funny, unsettling, and unapologetically feminine, Hula Hoop lives in the messy space between girlhood and reality. For Venus, whose mind is caught in an ever-spinning loop of daydreams, the line between her inner world and reality begins to blur. Alongside her best friend Andie, she must face the persistent horror of having a body, the chaos of existing in that body, and the friendships that keep us grounded when nothing else will.

Written by Isabella Iorio, Hula Hoop began as a playwriting class assignment in 2021 and grew into a full-length play developed over years of writing, rewriting, and dreaming about its life beyond the page. Now, an ensemble of six incredible actors brings this strange, heartfelt, and slightly unhinged world to life at the New York Theatre Festival this November!

Because sometimes growing up is a nightmare. Sometimes friendship is the only thing keeping you grounded. And sometimes you just need a hula hoop.
