Performance Space 122's contemporary performance festival, COIL, returns for its tenth anniversary year. Known for its groundbreaking contemporary performance, this year's COIL 2015 festival spans interdisciplinary art working with new technologies and forms. Through installations, live and virtual practices, PS122 is committed to redefining how, where and when performance is experienced.

Performance Space 122 Artistic Director Vallejo Gantner commented: "In the midst of PS122's transformation, and just a year until our move home to 150 First Ave begins, this year's COIL grapples with questions of transformation, change, and the breakdown of identities between audience and artwork, digitally and physically, and individuals themselves. The creation of new technology plays a part, but there is far more than that going on. We interact, we participate, we see audiences creating the work itself."

Four Groundbreaking Theater Productions:

In their celebrated show RoosevElvis, (Jan 2-10), the TEAM take us on a hallucinatory road trip from the Badlands to Graceland as the spirits of Elvis Presley and Theodore Roosevelt battle over the soul of Ann, a painfully shy meat-processing plant worker and what kind of man or woman she should become.

In Mike Iveson's dystopian musical Sorry Robot (Jan 6-17) the machines of the future set out to prove they can do almost anything but shut up.

In YOUARENOWHERE (Jan 8-17), Andrew Schneider, the Wooster Group wunderkind, experiments with the virtues of sensory overload via quantum mechanics, parallel universes, and online "Missed Connections."

Unpredictable, dark and funny, The Blind Date Project (Jan 7-17) starring Australia's Bojana Novakovic (Rake, Shameless), is a real event in a real bar to which everyone can relate - a blind date between two people who have never met and who are desperately in need of connection.

Four Visceral Dance Works:

Faye Driscoll's Thank you for Coming: Attendance, (Jan 6-10) envisions a society in which performance is both a collective and political act. PS122 and Danspace Project reprise this much beloved premiere iteration of the Thank You For Coming series, in which Driscoll explores different ways of building new bodies, new stories, and new ways of being around a constantly constructed and re-imagined group experience.

Through a unique practice of improvisation Molly Lieber & Eleanor Smith's movement work presents a living, breathing, thumping manifestation of a profound and raw artistic collaboration. Rude World (Jan 7-12) is the final series in a triptych of works created over the course of three years.

Inspired by Diego Velázquez's seminal rendition of Venus at her Mirror (1599-1600), From A to B via C (Jan 11-14), by much celebrated Swiss choreographer Alexandra Bachzetsis, explores the various provinces and domains of 'mainstream' popular culture.

Through two parallel solos weaving in and out of each other, BeginAgain, (Jan 14-16) zoe | juniper, questions the multiplicity of self, memory and perspective while exploring new technological methods for setting and triggering a raw tableaux of movement and stage design.

Three Form Pushing Installations:

In Sebastian Errazuriz's A Pause in the City that Never Sleeps, (Jan 1-31) a continuous yawn is projected repeatedly in Times Square. The bored character appears on a screen as an omnipresent head looking down from the skies, yawning between the masses of marketing and advertisements.

MY VOICE HAS AN ECHO IN IT (Jan 7-11) by Temporary Distortion is a six-hour durational performance of live music, spoken text and video set within a freestanding, sound-proof installation that is 24 feet long by 6 feet wide. Complex and densely layered, Temporary Distortion creates an intimate experience where everyone has a front row seat.

dataPurge by Ryan Holsopple / 31 Down (Jan 15 & 16) is a live, virtual cleansing of one's digital life. Clients will undergo data dialysis by monitoring the emotions associated with their online identities using body sensors and brain wave monitors during a live-streamed event.

And One CATCH:

Following its sold-out, line-around-the-block, wall-busting, keg-spewing 10th anniversary blowout at COIL 2014, CATCH (Jan 10) - "everybody's favorite" hydra-headed, multi-disciplinary, rough-and-ready performance series - returns to COIL 2015 to devastate your whole deal. CATCH is curated with delicate irreverence by Andrew Dinwiddie, Caleb Hammons & Jeff Larson.

Reservations and most tickets for COIL will go on sale November 17, 2014. Reservations may be made and tickets purchased online at ps122.org, via phone at 212-352-3101, and in person at venue box offices except where otherwise noted. Single ticket prices vary per event. Ticket packages include: The PS122 Passport (5 tickets for $75) and The COIL Pass (8 tickets for $122), recommended for arts professionals and performance lovers.

A continuous yawn is projected repeatedly in Time Square. The bored character appears on a screen as an omnipresent head looking down from the skies, yawning amongst the commercial vibrancy. As yawns are proven to be contagious, a mass of yawning people looking at the video suddenly appear bored, tired or bemused in the center of the city doesn't sleep. After some time the yawning masses leave Time Square, unconsciously continuing to carry with them their contagious message - spreading an epidemic of yawns throughout the city.

Faye Driscoll's Thank You For Coming series envisions a society in which performance is both a collective and political act. In Thank you for Coming: Attendance, the premiere iteration presented by Danspace Project in March 2014, performers pass through ever-morphing states of physical entanglement and scenes of distorted familiarity, building new bodies, new stories, and new ways of being around a constantly constructed and re-imagined group experience. Intimately staged in the round, Driscoll crafts a heightened reality of observation, invitation and interdependence. As audience and performers increasingly find themselves becoming one, a beautiful and chaotic shared identity emerges, culminating in a dynamic ritual of action and transformation.

Four performers and an upright piano create a haunting world where robots long to experience the same emotions that their embarrassing, sort of pathetic, not-very-appealing human masters feel. In a hotel that doubles as a software development facility in an ever-dystopian Florida, the machines of the future set out to prove they can do almost anything but shut up.

Beloved downtown performer, Bessie-Award-winning composer, and 2013 Ethyl Eichelberger Award winner Mike Iveson has written this farcical new play, studded with nine original compositions that will convert every human in the room into a metallic automaton.

No robots were harmed in the making of this piece.

MY VOICE HAS AN ECHO IN IT is a six-hour durational performance of live music, spoken text and video set within a freestanding, sound-proof installation that is 24 feet long by 6 feet wide. While viewing the performers through two-way mirrors, audience members listen to music ranging from drifty ambient sounds to erasure poetry to raucous punk-inspired anthems through headphones along the outside perimeter of the installation. Complex and densely layered, Temporary Distortion creates an intimate experience where everyone has a front row seat.

Viewers are encouraged to come and go throughout the six-hour duration of the event. Capacity is limited and reservations are strongly recommended.

Australian Film Institute award-winner and TV actress Bojana Novakovic (Rake, Shameless) plays Anna, a woman waiting at a karaoke bar for her date to arrive. With no idea of who she is about to meet or what is about to happen, each night a different performer joins her for an entirely improvised, intensely personal interaction - including karaoke numbers - in front of a crowd of willing participants. Guided only by text messages and phone calls and interspersed with random songs, each date promises to be as bizarre as it is dangerous. Things may turn out to be humiliating, tender or totally hot.

Basel and Zürich-based choreographer Alexandra Bachzetsis has been exploring the various provinces and domains of 'mainstream' popular culture - hip-hop, fashion, strip-tease, movies - and extracted the signature vignettes and ensemble pieces from it that have come to define her choreographic, performative practice.

Inspired by Diego Velázquez's seminal rendition of Venus at her Mirror (1599-1600), From A to B via C opens with three bodies moving from and towards each other, acting as each other's mirror image - mediated and unsynchronized. Complex scenes of nudity, gazing and instructional scores reflect on our common desire to communicate our own identity through the identities of others.

BeginAgain questions the multiplicity of self, memory and perspective through two parallel solos weaving in and out of each other. Juniper Shuey's futuristic design explores new technological methods juxtaposed against Zoe Scofield's intense, primal choreography, featuring Ms. Scofield and duet partner Ariel Freedman (Batsheva Dance Company, Kidd Pivot), triggers a raw tableaux of movement and stage designs. BeginAgain reveals an intrinsic truth about oneself and the aspects of humanity that unite us all.

BeginAgain features gorgeous, large-scale set design from paper artist Celeste Cooning, and Sound Design by Julian Martlew with music from Morgan Henderson (Blood Brothers, Fleet Foxes).

dataPurge is the first live exploration of PS122's Virtual programming which investigates how we create live performance digitally, interactively and beyond the stage.

dataPurge is a live, virtual cleansing of one's digital life. Clients will undergo data dialysis by monitoring the emotions associated with their online identities using body sensors and brain wave monitors during a live-streamed event. Online viewers can influence client outcomes through an interactive platform - a dataPurge version of group therapy. Upon completion, each client leaves with their soul awakened and ready to re-enter the digital world again with a clean slate.

PS122 invites you to drink, mingle and play a rousing game at the city's #1 Ping-Pong social club, SPiN New York. This year's Red + White Party is curated by the dance-party duo, WOAHMONE. Spanning the 60's, 70's, 80's and beyond, WOAHMONE embraces the occult, the seedy, the ecstatic, and the experimental. Nath Ann Carrera plays music that straddles queer sexual/contextual history, while Nica Ross' projections combine a pastiche of found films and YouTube clips.

SPAN is a discussion series based around theory and practice, the role of criticism and collaborative relationship forming within the ecosystem of the New York City performance industry. The two events of SPAN 2015 will be an Open Space and a Conversation/Mixer.

Jan 12 at 4pm: Open Space is a process for supporting people to self-organize and collaborate around any question. An opportunity for group discussions on topics proposed and curated by the attendees themselves. Participants are free to move between discussions, debating or spectating as they choose. Open Space as a constructive and inclusive platform was pioneered for the performance industry in the UK by Improbable.

Jan 17 at 3pm: Conversation/Mixer is a two part event, opening with 20 Questions for a Good Conversation, a curated question and answer session conducted between a small panel and an audience. 20 Questions was created by the founders of Forest Fringe and ranges from the concrete to the abstract as provocations to panelists and audience. The evening culminates with a good old fashioned mixer with music and wine, fuelled by new ideas, new friends and renewed energy.

Shanghai / New York: Future Histories

In our fractured times, it is more important than ever that artists and audiences are brought together to share their work and ideas. Performance Space 122, Asia Society, and the China Shanghai International Arts Festival (CSIAF) have begun an unprecedented institutional collaboration with these ideals in mind. Sam Wu, Qin Yi and Zolan come together in a music focused, multidisciplinary evening. These three emerging artists are articulating new forms - locally sourced but distinct in their engagement with the larger, international audience.

Sam Wu is a self taught 18-year old wunderkind whose award-winning chamber music compositions have been described as ""warm, sincere, and characteristic of a compassionate 21st-century metropolitan youth." Sam is the founder and conductor of the Youth•Music•Love ensemble, and has been concertmaster and assistant conductor for various orchestras around the world.

Mirror Mind, composed by a pioneer of Chinese contemporary electronic music Qin Yi, is a cross-over experiment combining dramatic performance, live percussion, interactive multi-channel electronic music and new-media visual arts. Mirror Mind explores the multi-layered nature of human existence with a "pan-acoustic" narrative approach.

Internationally recognized composer, Zolan, creates a special new music piece based on the Nobel Literature Prize Winning play Death and the Maiden using music to describe the 'Six Desires of a Human Being' - a Buddhism concept, which describes the six sensory pleasures derived from the eyes, ears, nose, body and mind.

Shanghai / New York: Future Histories is a major arts project of Shanghai Municipal Government sponsored by Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation. All participating artists are within RAW (Rising Artists Works), a new series of the CSIAF and a platform that develops new ideas and emerging artists from across China.

About Performance Space 122 - Performance Space 122 (PS122) provides incomparable experiences for audiences by presenting and commissioning artists whose work challenges boundaries of live performance. We are an innovative local, national and international leader in contemporary performance.

Beginning in 2011, PS122 embarked on one of the most unusual and potentially radical shifts in its history, including a re-structuring of artist support, a business model overhaul, and the renovation of our building. As PS122's East Village home undergoes a much-needed interior renovation supported primarily by the City of New York, DCA and DDC, PS122's core activity continues to be providing audiences with contemporary live performance.

For over 3 decades, Performance Space 122 has been a hub for contemporary performance and an active member of the cultural community. Under the curatorial vision of Vallejo Gantner (Artistic Director 2005 - present) PS122 has developed a set of programs designed to re-establish the value of live performance, provide singular experiences for audiences that inspire critical thinking, and sustain the creative process for artists throughout their career. Largely in partnership with peer organizations, PS122 currently presents artists in all disciplines in spaces all over the city during an annual fall & spring season and COIL festival in January.

In addition to the commissioning and presenting of artists from NYC across the US, and around the globe, PS122 has increased our activity off the stage to provide audiences with a variety of access points and context for the work on stage. These activities include both talkbacks with the artists as well as in depth conversations that bring together luminaries from non-arts disciplines to discuss a variety of topics including everything from religion, to migration, to queer real estate and cultural diplomacy.
