Edward Gardner, recently hailed by The Times (London) for the 'sheer vivacity' of his music-making, has been appointed Music Director of the Norwegian Opera & Ballet. He will assume the position of Artistic Advisor from 1 February 2022 before beginning his tenure as Music Director on 1 August 2024.

I fell in love with Jersey Boys when I discovered the cast recording back in 2006. That recording turned me into a fan of the group The Four Seasons which I honestly didn't know before this. Granted I knew some of the songs, but I found it fascinating that also 'my elders' didn't really know the group either. Later I learned that they never toured outside the United states. That could be a reason why the band went under the radar. I saw the musical twice in London and once in Las Vegas although my jetlag almost killed that experience. I had to drink four Red Bulls to stay awake. Luckily I did not need any Red Bull during the Norwegian premiere of this show. The show itself was energy booster enough for me.

It reeks of hunting, power and wet moss. An ugly hunchbacked man wanders among the trunks of dark pines, bearing a secret. Hidden away at home is his daughter, Gilda, whom he loves more than anything on earth. Among the guys, he acts tough in order to be liked – especially by his boss, the duke. When Rigoletto realises that the duke has also been together with his daughter, he commits a horrible crime, one that has tremendous consequences.

Da Mozart i 1787 skrev sine to strykekvintetter, etablerte han en helt ny musikalsk standard: Han doblet nemlig antallet bratsjer. Denne endringen skulle gi liv til en helt ny kammermusikkbesetning som flere av ettertidens komponister bygde videre på. G-moll-kvintetten, som vi får høre denne kvelden, er mørk og melankolsk av karakter og vekker assosiasjoner til både operaen Don Giovanni og Mozarts symfoni nr. 40 i g-moll.
