The Generic Theater Launches Acting Studio Program For Adults

In its repositioning as Virginia's Pro-Am resident theater, The Generic Theater launches an 8-week Acting Studio Program as a response to a growing desire from area actors who seek training. The program is an initiative to support The Generic's visionary pillar of provide access to theater education and training. Forthcoming initiatives will include programs for internships, apprenticeships and master classes. Last year, Generic Theater for Kids was launched as a response to a need for affordable acting classes for children ages 5 through 18. The program has seen tremendous growth. Since 2010, The Generic has organized and facilitated an annual theater conference where over 200 area citizens participated in workshops, seminars and panels on theater. It has attracted like-minded people who believe in Norfolk's presence and impact in the American theater landscape. The Generic offers affordable and scholarship incentives for prospective individuals to be able to participate with its programs.

American Shakespeare Center Only U.S. Theatre Featured in BBC's SHAKESPEARE UNCOVERED Series, 2/8

The American Shakespeare Center is the only U.S. theatre company included in the British Broadcasting Corporation's six-part series, 'Shakespeare Uncovered.' The final installment of the series, 'Shakespeare Uncovered: The Tempest with Trevor Nunn,' features the ASC prominently through rehearsal and performance footage from the company's 2011 production of The Tempest as well as interviews with ASC Co-Founder and Artistic Director Jim Warren and actors James Keegan and Miriam Donald Burrows.
Upcoming Performances Announced at The Barns at Wolf Trap

America's premier Irish folk ensemble, Solas, returns to The Barns at Wolf Trap after a six-year hiatus. Pending release in 2013 is their highly anticipated part-album, part-film Shamrock City, which uses audio and visual artistry to narrate the life of a young Irish immigrant as he makes his way in the United States during the Industrial Revolution. Derived from the experiences of band leader Seamus Egan's great-great uncle, Shamrock City captures the spirit of struggling immigrants striving to make a better life. Formed in 1994, Solas launched its career by playing in Irish pubs around New York City. Since then, the group has emerged as an Irish-American sensation and has released an astounding 10 records, featuring a fusion of Celtic classics and modern melodies. Spearheaded by group founders Seamus Egan and Winifred Horan, Solas combines varied instrumentation that includes guitars, violins, flute, tenor banjo, mandolin, accordions, concertina, bodhran, and more.

Virginia Repertory Theatre announces the opening of Cotton Patch Gospel on Friday, January 25, 2013 at Hanover Tavern, 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road. The show is part of the Acts of Faith Theatre Festival and will run through April 28. Adapted from the books by Clarence Jordan, the musical by Tom Key and Russell Treyz retells the Gospels of Matthew and John set in the mid-20th-century American South.
Barter Theatre Opens Play Submissions for Barter's Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights

Barter Theatre is accepting submissions of new plays for its 13th annual Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights (AFPP) taking place July 5th through August 12th, 2013. Founded in 2001, Barter's AFPP provides an outlet for new plays and playwrights with a distinctly Appalachian voice. Any original play that has not been previously published or professionally produced may be submitted for consideration by March 1, 2013.

Virginia Rep's Children's Theatre of Virginia kicks off 2013 with The Magic Flute today, January 18 at Willow Lawn, 1601 Willow Lawn Drive, Richmond, Virginia. The show is part of the Acts of Faith Theatre Festival and will run through February 10, 2013. Fairy tale magic hangs in the air when the mysterious Queen of the Night sends young Prince Tamino - armed only with a golden flute and a feathered friend - to rescue her lovely daughter. The Prince soon learns that nothing is as it seems and he must pass many tests before he and his beloved Princess can live happily ever after. Inspired by Mozart's masterpiece, the musical imparts a poignant message of tolerance as it weaves a web of make-believe and music.

The team of 24 Central High students were recently named Virginia High School League State Theatre Championships for the high school one-act play festival in the Single A High School division. Today January 12th, the students will have the chance to perform their winning play on the Barter Main Stage.
The Historic North Theatre Celebrates 1 Year Anniversary after New Ownership

This Saturday, January 12, 2013, will mark the one year anniversary of celebrity magician/illusionist Wayne Alan owning The Historic North Theatre Performing Arts Center. On the 12th, at 8:00 PM Wayne Alan's performance of his show, Magic of the Masters, the World's Most Famous Illusions will mark the occasion. It has been an extremely busy year that included renovating the complex, including replacing the fallen façade, and reopening last August 25th which was the 65th anniversary of the opening of the theatre in 1947.
