Synopsis

Holding the record for the most Tony Awards for a musical, The Producers is Mel Brooks’ groundbreaking and subversively dark comedy about two men attempting to pull off Broadway’s biggest con. When washed-up producer Max Bialystock finds out from fledgling accountant Leo Bloom that a Broadway flop can make more money than a hit with the right bookkeeping, the two set out to produce the worst play they can possibly find. Their search ultimately leads them to German loyalist Franz Liebkind and his tribute to the Nazi regime, Springtime for Hitler. Their frequently crass and crude adventure is forever immortalized in one of Broadway’s most brutally iconic spectacles.

Audition requirement

Song: Prepare 32 bars (no longer than a minute) of a song from a comedic, big-Broadway musical (think Guys and Dolls or How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) that shows your strongest vocal and character range. Don’t be afraid to make strong choices- the show is very spectacle-heavy, so be big!

Note for actors auditioning for Leo and Ulla: on top of this, please prepare 16 bars from a softer ballad in case we need to hear more.

Note – an accompanist is provided. Please bring in sheet music clearly marked. No recorded music please.

Monologue: prepare a monologue that is two minutes or less, and not from The Producers. Contemporary monologues are preferred. Comedic monologues are welcome but not required.

Dance: no dance at the initial audition, but both tap and jazz combinations will be taught at the callback for ensemble and most principal roles.

Headshot and Resume: please bring one copy of each.

Casting

The following character descriptions and breakdowns are obtained from the licensing agency for the play, and do not necessarily reflect how decisions will made in casting. Actors of all ethnicity, gender and identity are encouraged to audition. Age ranges are a guideline only; however, it is recommended that actors be 18 years of age or older if auditioning.
