Possum Point Players set auditions for 'The Marvelous Wonderettes' June 28, 29

Possum Point Players announce auditions for a fall musical, The Marvelous Wonderettes, written and created by Roger Bean, and directed by John H. Hulse. Auditions are scheduled Monday, June 28, and Tuesday, June 29, 6:30 PM at Possum Hall, 441 Old Laurel Rd, Georgetown. Show dates are September 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, and 19, and rain dates are September 24, 25, and 26.

The cast requires four women who can each play age 18 and 28. Those 18 and up are welcome to audition; all roles are open and available to anyone regardless of race, ethnicity, or body type. Experienced performers who enjoy singing, dancing, and acting are invited to audition. Act I of the play showcases the characters at age 18 at their senior prom; and then, Act II shows them at age 28, at their 10-year reunion. Those auditioning should prepare one-minute of an appropriate pop song from the 1950s or '60s that best showcases them, as well as the personality of characters in the show. Those auditioning are encouraged to bring a second selection as a backup for their audition song.

Director Hulse suggests that auditioning singers listen to singers of the eras represented in the show, such as Connie Francis, Doris Day, The Chordettes, and The McGuire Sisters for Act I, and Dusty Springfield, Lesley Gore, The Shangri-Las, and Betty Everett for Act II styles. They must bring sheet music in their key for the accompanist who will be provided. Also, acceptable will be singing to a CD with an accompaniment-only track, no vocals; the CD must be edited and cued correctly. No a cappella auditions are allowed.

Those auditioning may be required to learn a short dance/movement combination, all should come prepared to move. There may also be cold readings from the script.

The cast must be available for all show dates as listed, including rain dates. As of the current Covid safety protocols, all performances are scheduled to be outdoors on the open-air stage adjacent to Possum Hall. All rehearsals and performances will follow whatever social distancing state protocols are in place for the remainder of the summer and show weeks.

Those needing more information, or unable to attend the audition, but interested in auditioning or being part of the production crew, should contact John H. Hulse at 302-245-4147.

This smash Off-Broadway hit takes the actors and audience to the 1958 Springfield High School prom, where Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy are introduced. The four girls have hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts! Some of the story of their teenaged lives and loves is told as they serenade the audience with classic ‘50s hits including “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid,” and “Lipstick on Your Collar.” In Act II, the Wonderettes reunite to take the stage at their ten-year reunion and talk and sing through more about the highs and lows they have experienced in the past decade. All are charmed to find that no matter what life throws their way, they will conquer it together.

THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES is presented by special arrangement with Stage Rights (

Possum Point Players values diversity and inclusion in casting, and in all other areas of the organization.
