Provincetown Theater Sets Auditions For Mae West’s THE DRAG

Staged by artistic director David Drake, seeking large cast of all types for this BANNED 1927 comedy on Feb 7, 8 & 9

The Provincetown Theater will hold open auditions for the 2020 season’s spring opener, Mae West’s The Drag, on the weekend of Feb 7, 8 and 9 at the company’s playhouse at 238 Bradford Street in Provincetown, MA 02657. Billed as “A Homosexual Comedy,” this American icon’s long lost play about a closeted Park Avenue newlywed and his secret double-life with a band of Greenwich Village “pansies,” The Drag was shut down en route to Broadway in 1927 by the Vice Squad for “corrupting the morals of youths.” The Provincetown Theater is proud to RE-premiere the Mae West play that never made it to the Great White Way.

SEEKING: 16 non-union actors for speaking roles. (Non-speaking ensemble extras also sought; details below.) Male and Female roles, ages: 20s – 60s. Wide range of types sought: romantic ingénues to character thugs to judges, doctors, sirens, matrons, butlers, cabbies, and queens. All roles are open. Sides for The Drag available at auditions.

WHEN:

Friday, Feb 7th from 6-10pm

Saturday, Feb 8th from noon-5pm

Sunday, Feb 9th from noon-5pm

WHERE:

Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford Street, Provincetown, MA 02657

REHEARSAL & PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE: Rehearsal start date is April 13, 2020, with a schedule shaped around actors’ availability (rehearsals mostly taking place evenings during the week, and afternoons on weekends). For participation in the production, each actor will receive a $200 honorarium. The Drag performs Thursdays – Sundays, May 14 – June 7.

ALSO SEEKING ENSEMBLE: Casting extras for the ensemble in the “Pansy Craze” drag ball. Seeking drag kings & queens (or those willing to give cross-dressing a whirl) of all ages, genders, and races to apply at auditions. (No costumes necessary at tryouts.) Singing and dancing involved. Honorarium for ensemble will come from an even-split of audience donations to the “actors box” at the conclusion of the run.
