ZERBINETTA: Doubles as the Scarpolettos’ maid, the Polliones’ maid, a Priest, and an angel: a woman of any age.

A “maid” in name only, Zerbinetta serves only herself. Smarter and wilier than even Lucrezia, she is always working toward a bigger part in a bigger play. She is the only one on stage conscious of the fact that she is in a play, and thus undaunted by the twists and turns of the plot she moves swiftly to manipulate them in her favor. Unless, of course, she had been the one to instigate them. If we don’t love her, we will respect her.

LUCREZIA SCARPOLETTO: A woman, 25-50 years old.

An "abandoned" bourgeouis lady, Lucrezia is, in fact, strong and rather domineering. We do not feel sorry for her. After three years of being starved of affection by her impotent husband Mario, she gives in to Nemorino, who impregnates her immediately. But in her desperate attempt to save her marriage, not to mention her own skin, she ends up receiving far more affection than she bargained for.

NEMORINO POLLIONE A man, 25-50 years old.

A charming, quick-thinking Cassanova, Nemorino finds himself stuck between his business partner Mario and Mario’s abandoned wife Lucrezia. He too is intent upon saving his skin, his marriage, and his job with Mario, but the thought that this may require him to forego his philandering ways does not occur to him.

VESTALINA POLLIONE: A woman, 25-50 years old.

Pure and virtuous in her own mind, with a hint of serious sass, Vestalina may lament leaving the convent but probably less from piety than wanting a rest from the continuous pregnancies she and Nemorino cannot seem to stem. Yet when they do, she ends up being the one feeling abandoned.

MARIO SCARPOLETTO: A man, 25-50 years old.

Poor Mario, we know him well. Under his gruff, rough exterior is, well, a gruff, rough interior expressed in practically uncontrollable rage, contrariness, paranoia, and eventually passion. He blames Lucrezia for his impotence, and generally sees betrayal and conspiracy everywhere he looks. In the end, under those two layers of gruff and rough, we discover warm, mushy minestrone. Overcooked. He is the one we feel most sorry for.
