Synopsis-
Spanning more than 30 years in the lives of four sisters, the story begins with their adult lives in the U.S. and ends with their childhood in war-torn Dominican Republic. The play deals with the hardships of immigration, painting a vivid picture of the struggle to assimilate, the sense of displacement, and the confusion of identity. A beautiful portrait of a close-knit, hard-working family that acknowledges the importance of both laughter and loss. A book club favorite, bursting with music, compassion, and vivacity.
Character Descriptions:
YOLANDA – The Soul: primary voice: age 37 down to pre-teen, vivacious, outgoing, rebellious tomboy. Has mental breakdown. A writer. Shades of red.
CARLA – The Brain: oldest sister, plays 39 down to pre-teen, serious, A psychiatrist. Shades of yellow.SANDRA – The Listener: fragile beauty 2nd sis: ages 38 to pre-teen, has mental breakdown as adult. A college counselor. Shades of blue.
SOFIA – The Heart: youngest sis: wild and rebellious, happily married, most assimilated, only mother of all sisters. Shades of white.
PAPI – The Patriarch, strong, dignified, loves his girls, intolerant of non-Dominican values, a successful doctor; flees dictatorship, faces humiliation in NY: ages 55-60.
MAMI – the mother, the glue of family, from privileged family but tries to become an American mom, plays 45-55. (Also plays TIA CARMEN)
THE OTHER – plays all the family outsiders: boyfriends, husbands, teacher, police, soldier, the Englishwoman Dona Charito. Need Very flexible actor - plays German husband, American boyfriend, Hispanic cousin/boyfriend, an older man, a priest an English woman.
