A RAISIN IN THE SUN - Chesapeake Shakespeare Company

Audition for A Raisin in the Sun at Chesapeake Shakespeare Company!

CSC will host an open call and callbacks for an upcoming production of A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as “A play rooted in its own time that speaks through the years to our own”, we are excited to explore this American classic as Maryland’s premier classics theatre. Entering our 19th season, we are eager to bring this story to our Downtown Baltimore theatre and audiences. You can find more information about CSC
here.

Baltimore playwright, director, actor, and educator Reggie Phoenix will direct the production. More information about Mr. Phoenix can be found
here.

Rehearsals will begin January 3, 2022
Opening is scheduled for February 4, 2022
Closing is scheduled for February 27, 2022

All roles are paid a minimum of $200 per week. Housing is not provided.

Covid Policies:

Rehearsals may involve online, outdoor, and indoor socially-distant rehearsals. All actors will be required to be fully vaccinated and provide proof or will be required to submit to weekly Covid testing. Health and safety of the cast and production members are an absolute priority. All current COVID regulations (in accordance with the State of Maryland, Baltimore City and Actor’s Equity Association) will be followed during all days of rehearsal and performance.

We offer both non-union and AEA Guest Artist contracts.

Seeking:

  • Ruth Younger (F, 30’s)
  • Beneatha Younger (F, early 20’s)
  • Lena Younger (Mama) (F, early 60’s)
  • Joseph Asagai (M, 20’s)
  • Ensemble to play George Murchison, Bobo, Moving Men, and others

For the open call, prepare one contemporary piece or two contrasting contemporary pieces by an African American writer. The total of your piece(s) should be NO LONGER than TWO MINUTES. Also, various leadership from the company will be in attendance and MAY ask for a classical verse piece if this is your first time auditioning with us. If you have a piece prepared, it would be great to see in consideration for other shows in our season.

Audition Dates:
Saturday, October 9, 2021, 11am – 5pm: Open Call
Sunday, October 10, 2021, 11am – 4pm: Callbacks

Note: Callbacks will take place the very next day after the open call so if the director would like to see more, you will be given sides and scheduled for a callback in the room. If you are not offered a call back, it DOES NOT mean you are no longer in consideration for the production. Future callbacks or auditions may be scheduled at the director’s discretion.

If you would like to sign up for a 10 minute audition slot at our open call, please email
auditions@chesapeakeshakespeare.com with a preferred range of time that is convenient for you. DEADLINE to sign up is noon on Friday, October 8.
